Hello berries!
[name]Long[/name] time reader, first time poster!
My husband is [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Jr[/name] and our last name is Irish (O’D--------). If our baby is a boy, he would really love to have a [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] O’D III, but I really do not like the “naming the baby the same name as the dad” thing. It is confusing enough between him and his dad and there are also SEVERAL other Jrs and IIIs in his extended family already. So, he is coming around to the idea of still using his middle name for baby (as it is also both of our fathers’ middle names) but using a different 1st name that starts with “D”- baby will then have the same initials as dad.
We are both Irish-American and I have spent a lot of time living, studying and traveling in [name]Ireland[/name]. It is important to us to keep the 1st name Irish/Celtic in origin. Here are my top 3 ideas so far, PLEASE let me know if you can think of anything else!
**[name]Declan[/name] was long our favorite but husband’s best friend is now expecting a baby the same week as us and has threatened to also use [name]Declan[/name] if it’s a boy- so it may not work out (I would not use the same name as them as our chilidren will attend the same church and possibly schools). I am also noticing it becoming more popular in Chicago.
**I love [name]Damian[/name] but worry that people will associate it with “The Omen”? Is that a valid concern?
[name]Dean[/name], [name]Darren[/name], Daegan, [name]Deven[/name], [name]Devlin[/name], [name]Dermot[/name], are all some Irish D names. Not sure if you’ll like them or not though! They all sound fine with [name]Joseph[/name] to me.
I like [name]Desmond[/name] best of the 3 you’re considering, but all are pleasing and good.
[name]Donovan[/name] [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Donovan[/name] have both been off and on my list over the years! Definitely a suggestion I second.
Thanks for the feedback! Great ideas from all! I am not a big fan of using surnames as a first name, unless it is a family name, otherwise I have always liked [name]Donovan[/name] too! It would be hilarious if we named him “[name]Doyle[/name]” as that is my best friend’s surname. Her husband would love it!!!
I am in my 30’s, and I think the Omen came out in the late 70’s/early 80’s, so maybe younger people wouldn’t think of the scary child from the movie. Now I have to work on my husband… He loves [name]Declan[/name] already. [name]Desmond[/name] he is familiar with through Lost, but that is a very good connection (that character was awesome) and he also loves [name]Damian[/name] [name]Lewis[/name] from “Homeland” so I may be able to make some headway here! Thanks again!
Yes- the syllable counts! I am trying to keep those in mind. Especially with a 4-syllable last name.
clairelondon- I have always loved [name]Darragh[/name]/[name]Dara[/name] as I knew some really great guys with that name in [name]Ireland[/name]. Unfortunately we have a female acquaintace by that name so it is a no-go for my husband.
