The main character is [name]Connor[/name]. I need to name his teenage sister. They are of Irish descent; last name is O’[name]Leary[/name]. I prefer uncommon Irish names – either that, or something trendy and avant-garde for kids born in the 80’s. For the girl, I had initially thought [name]Fallon[/name], but I’m not really a fan of it. If you have any suggestions of what I can rename [name]Connor[/name], that’d be great, too.
[name]Ailis[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (AY-leesh) [name]Bridget[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (it’s not uncommon but really sounds the “part” and it goes well with [name]Connor[/name]. [name]Connor[/name] is pretty common so personally I wouldn’t chose anything weird).
[name]Caoimhe[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (keev-ah) [name]Maeve[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (see [name]Bridget[/name]) [name]Bernadette[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (see [name]Bridget[/name])
Assumpta O’[name]Leary[/name] (name in honour of the Virgin [name]Mary[/name])
Concepta O’[name]Leary[/name] (see Assumpta) [name]Malvina[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (name made up by author [name]James[/name] Macpherson in his work, [name]Ossian[/name]) [name]Clodagh[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (name of a river pronounced kloh-dah)
[name]Roisin[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (rosheen)
[name]Niamh[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (neev)
Mairsile O’[name]Leary[/name] (mar-sheel)
[name]Tuilelaith[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (twil-ay-lah). You could go with [name]Tallulah[/name]. Too many lllll’s for you?
[name]Mairead[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (MAW-rayd)
Fidelma O’[name]Leary[/name]
[name]Finola[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (fi-NOH-lah) nn [name]Nola[/name] [name]Susanna[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (soo-sana)
[name]Maible[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (maw-bile)
[name]Siobhan[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (shiv-awn)
[name]Sinead[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (shin-aid) Majella O’[name]Leary[/name] (name of [name]Saint[/name] [name]Gerard[/name] Majella, the patron saint of motherhood and childbirth. It’s actually a name for girls in [name]Ireland[/name])
[name]Sadhbh[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] (sive) - perhaps just Sive would be a better option. The spelling is complicated.
[name]Dervila[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] - means “daughter of a poet” pronounced DER-vil-ah) Mughain O’[name]Leary[/name] (moon)
If you’re sticking with [name]Connor[/name], I wouldn’t go too Irish for his sister’s name. If you’re going to change his name, I would suggest [name]Ciaran[/name] ([name]KEER[/name]-awn), [name]Cashel[/name], [name]Cian[/name] (KEE-awn), [name]Fintan[/name], Fionnbarr (fin-bar), [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Uinseann[/name] (in-shen), Carthage (KAR-thaj), [name]Donovan[/name], [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Cillian[/name] (kil-ian), Cathair (KA-heer), [name]Daithi[/name] (daw-hee), [name]Oisin[/name] (ush-een), [name]Colm[/name] (colum), Meallan (mall-awn), Lasair (loss-ir), [name]Declan[/name] (dek-lan), [name]Eamonn[/name] (ay-mon), [name]Jarlath[/name], Naoise (nee-sha), Phelim (fay-lim) or [name]Seamus[/name] (shay-mus). [name]Hope[/name] this helps you! [name]Happy[/name] Writing!
I looked at the 2008 list of most popular names in [name]Ireland[/name], so in the 80s these names might’ve been fresh then, and some traditional, easier to say names. I agree with the pp on not going for a super Irish name since that wouldn’t flow very well. Anyways, sorry for any repeats and I starred my faves!

HTH and be sure to tell us what your final choice is!
Wow, thank you so much for all the suggestions! They’ve really helped! I think there are two ways I can go with this. I can keep [name]Connor[/name] and name his sister a more known Irish name, like [name]Bridget[/name], or I could nix [name]Connor[/name] and name both of them more obscure Irish names. I’m not sure yet. It depends on what we find and what fits the characters! [name]Connor[/name] is kindhearted and soft-spoken, so if I do change his name, I would like it to have the same sweet feel.
I’m curious about surnames that I could put on both of them. What do you think? Something like [name]Mckenna[/name] (but not [name]Mckenna[/name]? Lol)? ”
More ethnic and obscure:
[name]Roisin[/name]
[name]Catriona[/name]
Saorise
[name]Aisling[/name]
[name]Siobhan[/name]
More common:
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Caitlin[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name]
[name]Tierney[/name]
[name]Shea[/name]
You know, I am really liking these three for [name]Connor[/name]. Which do you think most sounds like his character? I already know which one I like best, but I want to hear what you guys think.
[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Eamon[/name]
Also on the list. I may have to name some other siblings, too, so this list is handy. Any others you think could work for a character like [name]Connor[/name] on here?
[name]Fintan[/name]
[name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Killian[/name]
[name]Griffin[/name]
[name]Nolan[/name]
[name]Hayes[/name]
[name]Reid[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]
[name]Keenan[/name]
[name]Just[/name] to give you an idea, his girlfriend, who is an enormous part of the story, is named [name]Eva[/name].
Gosh, this is more difficult than I thought it would be!”
I think I would choose more commonly known Irish names. The main reason is pronunciation. If I were reading this story and you had chosen one of the names mischa suggested, I know I would stumble over [name]Connor[/name]'s sister’s name ever time I saw it. Whereas, if you chose a more common Irish name such as [name]Bridget[/name] or [name]Maeve[/name], I would feel much more comfortable reading her name.
I especially like the combination of [name]Connor[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name]. I think they make a very sweet sibling set. I also think [name]Connor[/name] and [name]Eva[/name] make a lovely couple! If it were me, I wouldn’t change [name]Connor[/name] but out of the names you listed, I like [name]Declan[/name] the most. And off of the potential sibling name list, I like [name]Nolan[/name] the most.
Thank you so much for your feedback, maggiedances14! I’m also starting to really like [name]Bridget[/name]. I think you’re right; I should stick with [name]Connor[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name]. Thank you so much, guys!
[name]Connor[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name] O’[name]Leary[/name] are a great brother and sister duo! I agree that it’s best to keep things simple for your sibling characters and these two names are wonderful. They’re definitely Irish but pronounceable and approachable! [name]Conn[/name] and [name]Bridie[/name]! Good luck!
I’m glad you think so, mischa! Oh, I feel bad now that [name]Bridget[/name] dies. :? [name]Ah[/name], well. The story is going quite well. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Birdie[/name] is a cute nickname for [name]Bridget[/name]? Thanks again, guys, by the way!!!
Oh no, say it ain’t so, [name]Bridie[/name] dies? I hope [name]Connor[/name] can cope with his loss! I must admit that It does sound like an interesting short story. Have fun writing it!
Oh, I’m glad you’re intrigued, [name]Mischa[/name]! Although, I’m not yet sure how [name]Bridget[/name] will die. Basically, the story revolves around [name]Connor[/name] and his girlfriend [name]Eva[/name]. [name]Connor[/name] has had an unfortunate life – actually, they’ve both had difficult lives – and [name]Eva[/name] helps him, but she doesn’t like when he helps her. And [name]Bridget[/name] is one of the reasons he’s so broken. And yada yada. [name]Connor[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name]'s parents were all crazy and bizarre, so that’s why I thought it would suit them to have more eccentric names, but that’s okay.
You know, I often find that children of wild and crazy people turn out to be quite normal in life. Maybe it’s a reaction to their chaotic upbringing. They want to “fit in” instead of “stand out”. Now get to work, girl! You have a story to write! Take care!
