Irish Naming Conventions

Woah, fun game!

[name]August[/name] [name]John[/name] “[name]Augie[/name]” after [name]David[/name] [name]John[/name]
[name]Montgomery[/name] [name]William[/name] “[name]Monty[/name]” after [name]William[/name] [name]Earl[/name]
[name]Christopher[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] “[name]Rio[/name]” after [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Richard[/name]

[name]Eliana[/name] [name]Lux[/name] after [name]Lucretia[/name] [name]Elaine[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name] [name]Kate[/name] after [name]Katherine[/name] [name]Ann[/name]
[name]Linnea[/name] Jenness after [name]Lyndsay[/name] Jenness

That was harder than I thought! I made it harder by making both names honor the person. My sibset isn’t the best, but oh well! I came up with fun new nn [name]Rio[/name] to call my husband, yay!

[name]Jonathan[/name] [name]Issac[/name]

[name]Solomon[/name] [name]David[/name]

[name]Joanna[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Isabel[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]

First son: [name]Alastair[/name] [name]John[/name]
Second son: [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Fitzwilliam[/name]
Third son: [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Bryan[/name] (poor kid)

First daughter: [name]Iris[/name] [name]Gloria[/name]

I thought, being part Irish, that you might be interested to know about another Irish naming convention which is still sometimes, although quite rarely, employed today, but was still fairly common 20 or 30 years ago.

Like in Hispanic countries, where [name]Jose[/name] [name]Maria[/name] is a common boys’ name for religious reasons, and the same is true for [name]Maria[/name] [name]Jose[/name], Irish boys and girls were (are) sometimes called [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]. Nowadays they would most probably go by [name]Joseph[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] respectively, but it was not uncommon when my parents, who are in their early fifties, or even my older cousins (30s) visited family there to meet little boys who went by their full [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Mary[/name]

Fun!

[name]Elliot[/name] [name]Francis[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Ian[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Rhys[/name]

[name]Isobel[/name] [name]Judith[/name]
[name]Lily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]

Maybe [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Isobel[/name] are silly together?

I love these boys first names together!

[name]Milo[/name] [name]Arthur[/name]
[name]James[/name] Hanlan
[name]Declan[/name] [name]Paul[/name]

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Vivien[/name]
[name]Lily[/name] [name]Lorraine[/name]
[name]Evangeline[/name] [name]Willow[/name]

I’m going to do this for my parents since I don’t have a spouse. Let’s see what my siblings and I would’ve been named!

The first son is named after the fathers father, the second after the mother’s father and the third after the father. The first daughter is named after the father’s mother, the second after the mother’s mother and third after the mother.

B1: [name]Howell[/name] [name]Jacoby[/name] (for [name]James[/name] [name]Howard[/name])
B2: [name]Liam[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name] (for [name]William[/name] [name]John[/name])
B3: [name]Jameson[/name] [name]Boyd[/name] (for [name]James[/name] [name]Boyd[/name])
G1: [name]Anna[/name] [name]Mariam[/name] (for [name]Marion[/name])
G2: [name]Iris[/name] [name]Rosemary[/name] (for [name]Irene[/name] [name]Marie[/name])
G3: [name]Maisie[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] (for [name]Jolene[/name] [name]Marie[/name])

Me too! Members of both of our families generally have at least two middle names, so I had a few to choose from, but [name]Bryan[/name]! Ugh. [name]Even[/name] he hates the name, he goes by his surname!
