Irmine: Yea or nay?

Tossing around the idea of naming our first child [name]Irmine[/name] (if the little babe turns out to be a girl). [name]Nick[/name]-names abound; there’s the obvious, [name]Irma[/name], but also [name]Mina[/name] or [name]Irminie[/name].

Preliminary searches on the usual suspect sites have not yielded much. What do you all think? First impressions, etc.?

Are you of [name]German[/name] heritage? [name]How[/name] are you pronouncing it? Two syllables (ER-man) or three syllables ([name]German[/name] “EER-min-uh”)? [name]Irmine[/name] sounds heavy and “dated” to me (akin to [name]Bertha[/name], [name]Hermine[/name], [name]Irma[/name], [name]Hildegard[/name], Ermentrude/Irmingarde/[name]Irmgard[/name] and [name]Gertrude[/name]). Have you considered [name]Wilhelmina[/name] nn [name]Mina[/name] or even [name]Ismene[/name]? Also, if you change the first letter to an “E”, the name becomes [name]Ermine[/name] which is a weasel. It’s soft fur is used to make coats and other clothing.

My first impression is [name]Ermine[/name]. I would pronounce them the same way so the image I get is of [name]Venus[/name] in Furs. It reminds me of [name]Sable[/name]. I see some appeal in both names, but I don’t think they’re that usable. The fur coat image is kind of sexy, lush, wintery cold/cozy warm…but I also think of weasels & of [name]PETA[/name].

I like the idea of [name]Irma[/name] or [name]Mina[/name] though. [name]Irma[/name] on it’s own or in a hyphenated combo would be sweet. [name]Wilhelmina[/name] could get you to [name]Mina[/name]. I would suggest [name]Carmilla[/name], [name]Carmella[/name], [name]Varvara[/name], [name]Delphine[/name], [name]Edna[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Francine[/name], [name]Galina[/name], [name]Janine[/name], [name]Lorraine[/name], [name]Marina[/name], [name]Maren[/name], [name]Karen[/name], [name]Marietta[/name], [name]Marielle[/name], [name]Nancy[/name], [name]Opaline[/name], [name]Patricia[/name], [name]Patrice[/name], [name]Serena[/name], [name]Salma[/name], [name]Selma[/name], [name]Salome[/name], [name]Thais[/name], [name]Teal[/name], [name]Verona[/name], [name]Philomena[/name]?

Yeah looks like ermine to me. I like [name]Irma[/name] though. Or Ermintrude if you wanted more nickname potential.

I thought of [name]Ermine[/name] too, not very flattering i’m afraid.

I am not a fan of the name.

It’s going to be a nay.

I kind of like [name]Irmine[/name] for a full name with adorable [name]Minie[/name] for a nn. It reminds me of Hermoine…Very cute!

Sorry, nay!

I don’t love it, it sounds a lot like vermin to me. I do like [name]Mina[/name] though.

I do love it. It’s spunky, a little witchy, vintagey but not tired. First impression is diminutive of [name]Irma[/name].
