Iroise

Hello,

I have a friend who is pregnant with twins. She was thinking about Iroise for her little girl, which I love and had on my own list. It’s the name of a sea (mer d’Iroise), part of the Atlantic Ocean, that borders the coast of Brittany. How would you pronounce it in english? What do you think about the name Iroise?

We say it Ir-waz in France
Her 3 year old boy is named @zur.

Thank you

Wow this is a beautiful name, I’ve never heard it before.

I wonder if people would attempt Ir-o-eeze because it’s visually similar to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].

I think this is very likely in English.

I don’t know what I think about Iroise. I appreciate the originality and I think it’s an inspired choice for a sister to Azur, but the sound isn’t the most appealing to my ear.

I’d suggest Isaure as an alternative but it’s probably too similar to Azur.

I instinctively pronounced it “ire- Roys” but the ir-waz pronunciation immediately makes sense once you say it with the french accent so I don’t think I’d have any problems remembering that’s what it was supposed to be if someone told me it once.

I admit I would have pronounced it eye-ro-eeze at first but i think it could be corrected. It’s a pretty name

I did actually attempt this at first :grimacing: It’s sweet, but I feel like it may have a lot of pronunciation hiccups.

I did this  though I am not super familiar with French language or geography! I would just need to be corrected once, and I think I could say the same for most people.

That being said, depending on where you’re based there might be slight pronunciation issues, but I think it’s a really cool and inspired choice!!

Honestly, I’d pronounce it something like ee-roy-see in [name_f]English[/name_f]. It also reminds me of Irish [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] and the animal tortoise look-wise, so I would definitely ask the person how they pronounce it.
Funnily enough, I didn’t see the [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] connection.
