The IRS has announced they’re delaying the filing deadline for US income taxes by a month from the usual [name_f]April[/name_f] 15 to [name_f]May[/name_f] 17 (that date because [name_f]May[/name_f] 15 is a [name_m]Saturday[/name_m]). What does this have to do with baby names though? If my theory about the delay of the SSA releasing the lists last year (from the usual Mother’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] weekend) was right (waiting until after the tax deadline so as to make sure the list is as complete as possible, since SSNs are needed to claim dependents) this means we may be in store for another delay this year (although not as much since last year’s filing deadline delay was into [name_u]July[/name_u]). With the one-month delay that might mean Father’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] (or perhaps Independence [name_u]Day[/name_u]) will be the data-filled weekend this year.
OTOH, if the reasoning last year was merely avoiding having more lighthearted news stories when the COVID crisis was still fairly new then there shouldn’t be any need for a delay this year (unless some other dominating headline occurs around that time).
