[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Addy[/name_f] would immediately be a nickname for [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think you could avoid it?
Oh gosh I hope not. I love [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] but despise [name_f]Addie[/name_f] / [name_f]Addy[/name_f]. The only way to kick a nickname to the curb is to correct people. I have a friend who is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], not [name_f]Katie[/name_f], not [name_f]Kate[/name_f], etc. When we met in high school she would correct people who would call her by a nickname such as “I go by my full name [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] not [name_f]Katie[/name_f]”.
If I were to ever use [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and someone called her [name_f]Addie[/name_f] I would correct them to [name_f]Adeline[/name_f].
I think you can correct people throughout her childhood, but might not be able to avoid it once she’s a teen if she prefers it. Maybe you would like [name_u]Abilene[/name_u]?
I agree with pp’s, it’s only three syllables so I think you could correct people pretty easily.
Technically yes, but I hear [name_f]Addy[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Addie[/name_f]) a lot less in my daily life. In my school, nicknames are everywhere, especially with multiple people named the same thing (instead of [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] A and [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] S, it’s [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Nia[/name_f]. Although we have quite a few more Danielles too). I called an old friend [name_f]Adriana[/name_f] by [name_f]Addie[/name_f] but I’ve never used it other than that. My go-to nickname would be [name_f]Della[/name_f] because I hear it more often, think it’s more uncommon and cool and I see it in [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] right away.
Other nicknames:
[name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]/[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
I think that [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] actually provides quite a unique selection of names
I agree, you could correct people without too much difficulty. Another nn could be [name_f]Lina[/name_f].
I don’t think so. We correct anyone who calls our [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_m]Ben[/name_m]. It has only happened a couple of times.
I don’t blame you, [name_f]Addy[/name_f] is not attractive to me, either.
There’s always going to be some slightly intrusive person who jumps right in to nicknaming without asking first, no matter what the name is.
It may happen a couple or a few times, but just quickly correct anyone who tries to call her that.
As pp have said, it will be easy enough to correct. I generally call people what they introduce themselves as and only give them nicknames if they approve.
If you are looking for alternative nn I like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] or [name_f]Lina[/name_f]
Nah. Especially with The Age of [name_f]Adaline[/name_f] (who went by [name_f]Della[/name_f] in the film occasionally). She could be [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], etc., although you might have to emphasize another nn more than [name_f]Addy[/name_f], since it certainly is the most popular option! I like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] a lot, though, and she has a nice gambit of nns to chose from.
Good luck!
No, I don’t think it would be a problem. I was an assistant teacher in a class of about 19 kids, including an [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], and they only ever called her by her first name. It was spelled differently; she pronounced it [name_m]AD[/name_m]-el-ihn.
Maybe yes and maybe not. I have a name that it’s very easy to nickname and everybody calls me by my full name (with some exceptions with my friends). I actually kinda wish more people would use a nickname with me to be honest, but if your girl introduces herself as Adeline I don’t think people will jump into call her Addy, and she can always say “I don’t like that, I prefer Adeline”.
Adeline also has more nickname possibilities like Ada. However, I don’t think you can control forever how people will call her. Maybe one day she will like to be nicknamed Addie by the people who is important for her: like her friends. I wouldn’t think too much into it, anyway. Sometimes there are names that doesn’t have an obvious nickname and people still find a way to shorten them. If you truly love Adeline (which is a gorgeous name), I wouldn’t give up on it just because some people could call her Addy.
I know little girls named [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] who are called by their names in full. However, you might want to consider whether or not it would bother you if your daughter preferred [name_f]Addie[/name_f].
I LOVE Adeline I think its beautiful and I actually think Addie (Not Addy) is really cute. I think it would be pretty easy to ensure no one called her Addy - I Know a Madeleine who refuses to go by Maddie and it works for her. Like ashthedreamer said though, your best bet would be finding a different nn for people to call her.
