Hi, I love the name Alice for a girl. However, it has come to my attention that there is a day called “Alice Day” every April 25, which is also known as an annual pedophilia pride day. To make things worse, my daughter’s last name will be Day.
Is this “Alice Day” well known in the parental community? I want to name my daughter Alice, but I certainly don’t want to give her a name with a very unfortunate association.
uhhh no that’s not something i’m familiar with - i’ve never heard of “alice day” before, and i don’t think it’s a commonly used term. i googled the phrase/name and most results were for an old hollywood actress named alice day, so it’s not like a hypothetical alice day would have her day ruined by googling her own name. alice is a super well-used and cosy classic, so i think it’s definitely safe to use.
I haven’t heard of this day, but I have read about the controversy surrounding [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] C [name_u]Carrol[/name_u] so I get the connection with calling it [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u] (well, I’m guessing that’s why it has been named that). I would never have thought anything except what a really nice name it is, before I read this topic, though.
What a horrible dilemma for you.
I’ve never heard of the association, and I don’t think it’s well-known in general. However, you’re the only one that can decide if it makes the name unusable for you. I personally don’t think it’s a dealbreaker, as the association is thankfully very niche, but if it’s something that makes you uncomfortable to the point of not being able to move past it (which is totally understandable!), I’d try to pick a different name.
know of the association only because lewis carroll was (supposedly?) a paedophile, but what comes to mind first when i hear ‘alice day’ is the actress. ‘alice’ itself is a beautiful name, and you shouldn’t feel badly for using it! i rarely think of the author when i hear the name, and i doubt that the day will generate any large coverage in the future. good luck <3
I’ve never heard of it, and I think the overwhelmingly vast majority of people would not have heard of some niche pedo trend. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] has hundreds of other associations. You’re good.
I’ve never heard of it and doing a quick search, it appears to have been something that people posted about on Facebook–warning others of–but there’s no mention of it on the FBI’s website or any other child protection website. I think it’s more or less propaganda and something to cause unnecessary fear.
However, if you’re concerned about the association I’d stick to using [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as a middle name or choosing something else that strikes your fancy.
So I don’t think anyone would know this unless they have participated or been exposed in some way to this -known someone with these proclivities, perhaps. ?? Hopefully not. ( and am not referring to you but maybe the person who told you did not realize the person who told them???) This is like dark web stuff. No one in common world I think knows or has ever heard of this as it’s a crime. So I do not think you need to worry about your child being named that and anyone thinking that. However I would be very concerned and question the person who told you this. It’s absolutely horrific if even remotely true. And maybe should be reported
Never heard of it, and I doubt the majority of people would associate ‘Alice Day’ with that. But if it bothers you, then perhaps don’t use it. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] can always be used as a middle name if you want, and she could be referred to as [name_f]Alice[/name_f] whilst still having a different first name. Additionally, you could always name her a variant of [name_f]Alice[/name_f], or make it a hyphenated name if love the name [name_f]Alice[/name_f] a lot (ex. Mary-Kate Olsen)
I’ve never heard of it and I think 99.99% of people out there will have never heard of it either.
I’ve known many girls and women named [name_f]Alice[/name_f] since I was a child (it’s a fairly common name in my community) and nobody has ever brought up this association.
We’ve just had a baby girl who we named [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and we have had nothing but positive comments from everyone, online and offline. I’ve also got a fair few friends named [name_f]Alice[/name_f], one with a very similar surname to “Day” (think same pronounciation but different spelling) and I’ve never ever heard of this association.
In fact, we have actually been calling the day we went to officially register our daughter’s birth “Alice Day” - as in, the day she became [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. Weird coincidence, I know. Obviously I didn’t know it might have a negative association at the time, but I’ve mentioned that phrase to people and nobody has batted an eyelid at all. I think you should be fine! It’s a lovely name (if I do say so myself?). But if it makes you uncomfortable and you are unable to shake the association, I agree that maybe it would be better as a middle
I have never heard of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u] before, and I usually don’t care much about random associations, but…
With your last name being [name_u]Day[/name_u], I think this would be a no-go for me. If you name your daughter [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Day[/name_u], and she meets a pedophile someday, I think this could make her stand out to them, which you definitely don’t want.
A similar scenario this reminds me of: I have a family member whose last name sounds like “Alert” (though it isn’t spelled that way). They have joked about naming their daughter [name_f]Amber[/name_f], but they would never do it because it is just asking for something bad to happen to a kid.
I am not superstitious, but I would steer clear of amber alert or alice day for a child. Sorry there are sick people in this world to ruin your name choice
