Is Alma usable for us?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! DH and I have been discussing having another and possible names. We really like the name [name_f]Alma[/name_f] for a girl and have had it on our list before, but our last name already has “alma” in it.

Without fully saying our last name, it’s kind of similar to Dalmatian (but with the second “a” being pronounced with an “uh” sound rather than the long “ay” sound). It’s three syllables, so it’s not like her name would be something like [name_f]Alma[/name_f] [name_f]Palma[/name_f]. And the pronunciations are a little different because we pronounce the “al” in [name_f]Alma[/name_f] like the word “all” and the “al” in our last name like the name [name_m]Al[/name_m].

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it could work or is it a no go?

I think you could do it. I know people with more rhymey firsts/surname combos, and they make it work.

[name_f]My[/name_f] only pause would be it the surname starts with the ‘Al’ sound? If it’s a different letter (like Dalmatian), that probably flows better ?

I also love the name [name_f]Alma[/name_f]! What gives me slight pause is the potential to be mispronounced (but I live in US) but I’d still totally go for it, it’s a beautiful name! and last names change sometimes. So it may not be a bad thing if the 2 are a little rhymey imo, if anything it’s an oad to where she came from

It’s a no for me, unfortunately! I guess it could depend on the surname, but to me I feel like it’d likely be too in-your-face rhymey and maybe sound a little silly out loud. That said, I do pronounce [name_f]Alma[/name_f] with an “ah” sound – but most people I know would pronounce it like that too

I would advise you not to, honestly.

I think it’s fine
