Is Aphrodite usable/wearable?

I think so, unfortunately. If she had just been honest, I think she would have been a great addition to the forum, but yes, indeed. :frowning: It’s quite sad.

Definitely not, imo. It’s a very lovely name in theory, and who doesn’t think that their daughter is beautiful? However, for starters, it could always cause jealousy if you had other daughters, because, well, their elder sister is named after “the most beautiful goddess”, and they aren’t, I know that would cause me to be jealous of my sister, and as a younger teen, would have likely make me question my self esteem. My second issue, is that the name is a big thing to live up to, just the same as [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]. If your daughter happens to be bullied in school (personal experiences here) for looking “unattractive” by her classmates, her name wouldn’t exactly help, it would actually likely intensify the situation and add more fuel. I would personally avoid it.

Not in my opinion, it’s a lot to live up to.

Well, the child could be really ugly, so I would probably not use it, ever.

However beautiful in legend and sound this name may be, I think it is definitely not useable for a modern little girl. As a middle name, with another middle name, it could if you really like it. As in [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Mia[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanette[/name_f] [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f].

This is a difficult one for me because I really love Greek names, especially mythology ones and I am planning to use [name_f]Athena[/name_f] one day . Part of me wants to point out [name_f]Dita[/name_f] as a sophisticated short nn for [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] but even that has difficult connotations I guess ([name_m]Von[/name_m] Teese). I do agree that [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is a bit much to handle, especially as a young girl, but I do really love it, mostly for it’s connection to the sea (it’s thought to mean sea foam by some). If you love it but can’t use it and don’t want to consign it to the middle you could always use Astarte instead. It has the same feel as [name_f]Athena[/name_f] in terms of a usable [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] name for me and Astarte was the goddess of sex, fertility and war but she is not well known enough for it to be a problem. Or you could go for one of the Nereids’ names, if like me you love the sea connotations. There is a list on nameberry, I think it’s today’s cool list of the day or something.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] seen the link for the Nereids names: Names of The Nereides | Nameberry
There’s also [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f] as other options for similar meaning names, and [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f] is also Greek.

I did think it was odd that she became pregnant when her daughter was like 1 month old…needed more kids to name, I guess. I remember she posted about money issues a lot. I hope nobody ever sent her money

Yes, there are some potential problems that others have already pointed out, but I also feel like some people in this thread are being a tad too negative and dramatic. (I haven’t encountered people piling on [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] or [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] in quite the same way.)

It’s a lot of name, that’s definitely true, but the child molds and shapes the name and the feelings people have about it once they’re actually wearing it. This is as true of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] as it is of [name_u]Wren[/name_u] or [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. I wouldn’t use it as it’s just not my style, but I don’t think you need to banish it from your list just because I or others wouldn’t jump on it. Keep it on a “maybe” list. Your feelings could change for or against when you’re actually looking at a living child. Until then, I’d tuck it away.

15 baby girls named [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] last year, so at least that many parents disagreed with the previous posters. 60 named [name_f]Venus[/name_f].

No. The sexual connotations are too heavy and aren’t appropriate / wearable for everyday life.

I really like some Greek names, but I’m not really a fan of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f].

@ash I agree… I’m surprised so many people are against it now but were all for it back then.

I was thinking the same - but then again, the massive immense love for [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] also seems to have died off, I think she (if they were even female in RL?) was just a rather intimidatingly influential figure here on Nameberry for some, and therefore, many liked her name choices at the time (I don’t recall myself being a massive lover of it though, [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Illyria [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] I loved, but the [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] combo, not really.). Another thing could be that, since she was found out to be a troll, her ‘name’ and her 'daughter’s name are sort of like, tainted. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my guess on the matter!

I don’t think it is, maybe as a middle, but not as a first

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] or [name_f]Athena[/name_f] are much more wearable, although goddess names are not my style.

I think [name_f]Aphra[/name_f] is a beautiful name. So you could formally call her [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], on paper, and just use [name_f]Aphra[/name_f] for all other circumstances. In the middle spot, it’s definitely usable, inspiring and full of stunning beauty. I see the appeal.

It’s definitely useable! I knew a girl in high school named [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] and she was so nice, beautiful, confident and popular. It’s definitely not common but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

I can see why some people would think it’s not useable, but they are wrong. I think any girl would love to bear this name ! I can see it inspiring confidence, but not conceit.
