Is Arrietty too dreamy?

The other day I came across Ariette, the [name_m]French[/name_m] form for aria music, and loved it but I don’t like how similar it sounds to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], so I thought of [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f]. I absolutely love the movie and like the connection, but I’ve always dislike names that seem “you have a daydreaming mother stuck in her adolescence” (although true). At the same time, I love quirky unique names, such as [name_u]Cairo[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_u]Sailor[/name_u], Willeth, Pembrooke (all for girls).

So I want to ask what y’all think of [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f], is it one of those try-too-hard names? nn would prob be [name_m]Eddie[/name_m].

I wonder why [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] and not [name_f]Etty[/name_f]/[name_f]Ettie[/name_f]?

I have [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] on my own list in these combos: [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] [name_f]Morning[/name_f], [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] [name_f]Monae[/name_f], and [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]. My husband and I both love this name and its in our top three if we have another daughter.

As far as [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] goes, I don’t think it’s too dreamy necessarily…and I like the connection to The Borrowers. The film is not well-known enough to be the first thing people think of, I think. So, I’d say go for it.

To me, it does seem a little too dreamy. If you want a similar sound, I like [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] as afirst name or Ariette as a middle name. If you go with Ariette, your daughter will at least be able to explain that it’s an actual word with a beautiful meaning in [name_m]French[/name_m].

To me it doesnt sound dreamy… I think it would work good irl.

thanks guys! So i’m Taiwanese and we would use a Chinese name as middle.

I’ve always like cute boyish names on girls, and I kind of want to counter-balance the uniqueness of her name with a more established, well-known nn. Also I personally find the soft “T” in etty/ettie difficult to pronounce so I opt for the “D” instead.

I love [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f]! It’s so beautiful and whimsical! I don’t think the name’s “trying too hard” at all. Daydreaming or having your head in the clouds does not make you “stuck in your adolescence”, that’s just your personality/interests and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I think you should use it if you like it.

“Too dreamy” is not something that I would consider a problem by the way.

I love [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f]!

My only issue with [name_u]Ari[/name_u]- names is that in 2015, there were over 20,000 babies born with [name_u]Ari[/name_u]- names ([name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], etc.) That doesn’t include all the babies who could still end up going by [name_u]Ari[/name_u] ([name_f]Azaria[/name_f], [name_u]Amari[/name_u], etc.) It’s just really popular. [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] is certainly a different nn for [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f], but as she gets older there’s always the possibility she’ll end up going by [name_u]Ari[/name_u] so it’s something to consider.

namechange93, thanks for the positivity! I really appreciate it.

maryelise, the nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] doesn’t bother me too much, but if [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] really doesn’t stick, I would try [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] or [name_f]Ally[/name_f].

My family thinks its sounds funny and difficult for my Taiwanese relatives to pronounce, so I’m still contemplating between [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] and [name_m]Surya[/name_m].

Hmm, I think it’s a pretty name to say out loud, and I think [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] is a lovely nickname. However, if she’s tall, or has an abundance of hair, she could end up with the nickname Yetti… Kids can be cruel, you know.

What about switching the “A” for an “O” and testing Oriette? I love “O” names, and there’s no [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] rhyming!

It’s a bit too sing-song for my taste, as if its already a nickname. Ariette or [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] work better imo for an adult.

I think [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] is beautiful.

I recommend [name_f]Aracely[/name_f]. It has a similar vibe and is a “real name”. Pronounced ara-CELL-y
