Is Atlas too big of a name?

What are your first impressions of the name [name]Atlas[/name]?

I am seriously crushing on it right now, and in particular the combo [name]Atlas[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] _____ or perhaps as a middle name, something like [name]Barnaby[/name] [name]Atlas[/name]?

Can it work as a first name or is it best left as a middle name?

I would fine it a lot to live up to as a first name. I’m often in the minority on that front though. I love mythology, and I love many of the names, but I think it’s harder to claim a name as your own when it’s so strongly tied with famous figure. Middle names though for me are much more flexible. I’m not big on [name]Barnaby[/name] though. I find it a bit dusty and also the possibility of [name]Barney[/name] as a nn is a bit much for me.

I love love love [name]Atlas[/name]! It’s one of my favourites! I like it more for the body part association than the mythology (which is weird, lol). My SO said [name]Atlas[/name] may be a bit much but it’s ā€œpretty deadlyā€ā€¦ but he’s really in to mythology and history.

I’m not sure how usable it is, honestly, but I do think it’s awesome. I think there’d be a lot of people making remarks like, ā€œWhy didn’t you just name him Dictonary/ Thesaurus/ Newspaper/ Wikipediaā€ so it may be better as a mn.

I love [name]Barnaby[/name] as well, it was my #1 years and years ago. The two don’t really work well together in my mind, though. [name]Barnaby[/name] is such a soft, plush, beige kind of name. [name]Atlas[/name] is hard, red, and heavy.
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Atlas[/name] works for me, as [name]Theodore[/name] is a bit heavier. I like that quite a bit!

I really like [name]Atlas[/name]…I enjoy the sound of of it and it reminds me of another name I like-[name]Atticus[/name]-just shorter and more to the point. I’ve seen it as a name so much that I don’t think about the books of maps…I’m sure it would take other people a little longer to adjust but I do think it’s useable.

To me [name]Atlas[/name] has 2 problems- like you said, it’s a big name on the mythological side and I immediately picture an actual atlas in the back of a van. Too many pre-I phone road trips I guess.

[name]Barnaby[/name] isn’t one I can get into either. It sounds a bit stuffy & pretentious to me.

I love [name]Atlas[/name]!
Not so fond of [name]Barnaby[/name]…

I love the name [name]Atlas[/name] [name]Theodore[/name]! I think it’s usuable and gorgeous. I’m starting to like [name]Barnaby[/name] as well.

I [name]LOVE[/name] that [name]Atlas[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] looks like At Last Heodore. Since the Theodores ā€œThā€ is soft it doesn’t sound like ā€œat lastā€.

No pun intended, but I feel that [name]Atlas[/name] may be a name too heavy to bear on a child’s shoulders, even throughout adult life. (unless they grow up to be a bodybuilder or something…) It might not be too much in the middle name slot though.

I think both [name]Atlas[/name] and [name]Barnaby[/name] are better suited to being middle names, I find [name]Atlas[/name] to be very ā€˜heavy’ and [name]Barnaby[/name] a bit ā€˜old mannish’.

We used [name]Atlas[/name] in the middle and love it. I love the sound of the word, more than any connotations it has. Everyone thinks it is cool and masculine, which I like, but I also love how soft the word sounds.

Interestingly, it actually turns out to fit our adorable, smart sweet baby boy better than [name]Henry[/name], so we often call him [name]Atlas[/name] or the full [name]Henry[/name] [name]Atlas[/name].

I love that it is unique but easy to say and spell. I think meanings are a bit overrated and seem more important when choosing a name than they really are. Most people don’t go through everyday life hung up on the literal meaning of their name. The name ends up meaning whatever qualities a person brings to it. In my opinion. But regardless, Atlas to me means strength and endurance, and calling my happy baby Atlas doesn’t feel heavy in the slightest bit.

[name]Love[/name] my baby boy [name]Atlas[/name] with all my heart.

As you can see from my signature, I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Atlas[/name]. I think it’s a lot less ostentatious than [name]Destiny[/name] or [name]Genesis[/name] or [name]Messiah[/name] or [name]Angel[/name] or [name]Joy[/name] – and probably a lot easier to live up to. After all, the kid is going to shoulder some kind of burden during his life. Why not do it while wearing a stylish, uplifting name?

[name]Atlas[/name] is beautiful, but being a classicist I can’t overcome the heavy mythology connected to this name. I would not do it in teh first spot, maybe the middle.

Well I am aware of the mythology connection, but my immediate first impression is an atlas book used to look up countries, etc. and I think that would be most people’s first impression too. so I’m not really a fan of it.
