[name]Just[/name] curious - do you think [name]Aurora[/name] is usable as a name so soon after the horrible shooting in [name]Aurora[/name], CO? What would you think if someone named their baby [name]Aurora[/name] right now? Would you make the connection? Would you find it tasteless? Or would you feel that not using the name is letting the horrible man who did this win even more?
I’m not considering [name]Aurora[/name], but I thought this might be an interesting conversation.
There was a thread about this right after it happened, it didn’t get a whole lot of replies though so I think its a good one to continue!
My thought then and now is that [name]Aurora[/name] will probably be okay, but it’s a little soon to know. I don’t think ppl are going to refer to “[name]Aurora[/name]” the way they do/did “[name]Columbine[/name]” (and I think most people agree that [name]Columbine[/name] isn’t so usable as a result) but for me, that’s what will be the deciding factor.
I’ve heard “[name]Colorado[/name] massacre” a lot, “Dark [name]Knight[/name] shooting”, “[name]Colorado[/name] movie theatre” and yes “[name]Aurora[/name] shooting”…but one hasn’t really “stuck” yet from what I’ve seen. Anyone else have a take on that?
Anyway, [name]Aurora[/name] is a nice name with many positive associations, I hope people aren’t scared to use it.
I think it’s too soon right now, but in time it might be usable. It’s a beautiful name, and is also the name of one of the Disney princesses.
Hurricane [name]Katrina[/name] was years ago, yet people still negatively associate [name]Katrina[/name] with the hurricane. [name]Just[/name] like lineska said, the shooting is also being referred to as the “[name]Colorado[/name] Massacre” or the “Dark [name]Knight[/name] Shooting.” It’s not solely focused on the name [name]Aurora[/name]. The fact that people are referring to it as something else besides the “[name]Aurora[/name] shooting” gives me hope that the name will be usable soon.
I did not get that associatioon when I opened this thread…but yeah it is a little soon but I also don’t thinkthe name should be avoided if your heart is set on it and your baby is due now!..its a very pretty name …and very princessy
I think it’s safe, I didn’t know the city’s name was [name]Aurora[/name]. I only knew it as [name]Colorado[/name] Shooting. The name [name]Aurora[/name] has been around longer than the shooting. I think more people will associate it with the disney princess.
Doesn’t bother me one bit
I didn’t even know the place was called [name]Aurora[/name] until several days later. All I heard was “[name]Colorado[/name] shooting” and “Dark [name]Knight[/name] shooting”, and still I rarely hear [name]Aurora[/name] mentioned.
When I read the name, I didn’t initially think “shooting.” I think it’s a great name, and 10 years from now people aren’t going to always associate that name with a tragedy.
Very interesting to hear what everyone thinks. Personally, I think it would be a little strange if someone named their daughter [name]Aurora[/name] so soon after the shooting, but I think in a year, or even a few months, everyone will have forgotten that the “Dark [name]Knight[/name] shooting” took place in a town called Autora.
I guess you can compare this to the example of the decline in the use of the name [name]Columbine[/name] for girls after the [name]Columbine[/name] shooting. I think people still associate that name with the shooting. For me [name]Aurora[/name] is just a Disney princess, and I don’t immediately think of the theater shooting.
I think you can still use it because there were so many brave, noble people there and the name is really nice.
