I live in Australia too, and of course I know the tragedy. I never would have associated [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] with it, just upon hearing it on a little girl.
I would have to actually read a news article or google it to remember the exact name of the child anyway. I think enough time has passed and it’s a very pretty name.
I’d never heard of [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain and my only association with the name was [name_m]Hank[/name_m] [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]. As unfortunate as her story is, I don’t think it should prevent the current use of the name.
Yes it is. I was born 13 years after this incident happened, and whenever I hear [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] I think of [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain. My high school did a project on her once, and the whole class knew who she was, so it is still well known.
I think it’s usable, but I live no where near Australia and have never heard that name or story before. So maybe don’t include my opinion on your poll…?
[name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain was not thought of at all when I read the title of this thread. I actually thought you were worried about [name_m]Hank[/name_m] [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]… Lol
As and Australian born in the very early 90s I did hear the ‘joke’ when I was a kid a handful of times (enough to count on one hand!) I had no idea of the actual name of the child or reasoning behind the jokes until I was at high school and had access to the internet and the reason why I remembered it was because I did a assignment on Australian animals and then a more in depth one on Dingoes. When I talked to my Mother about Dingoes she had forgotten about the name of the child until I mentioned it and actually thought her name was [name_m]Azriel[/name_m].
I like the name and I feel like it has been awhile since hearing of the story and it has been 36 years (?) since the incident and 4 years since last hearing about it.
My association is more so with the actor [name_m]Hank[/name_m] [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] as The Simpsons are awesome
If you are worried how about [name_m]Azriel[/name_m], [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_f]Zaria[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Zalia[/name_f]/Zahlia, Zahli… [name_m]Just[/name_m] some names that I find have some similar sounds. If you can’t get over the name but don’t like the google search for ‘[name_f]Azaria[/name_f]’ then maybe the ‘[name_u]Azariah[/name_u]’ spelling.
While it seems most here are ok with the name, it seems that a lot don’t know who [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain actually is, and with me being born in the late 90’s I only know of the closure of the case. At the time it was reported that [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] meant “sacrifice to the wilderness” so I’m worried that people who remember the case may think I’m some sort of Satanist. And while I’ve never heard any dingo jokes it’s not something I would want to potentially subject my child to. I’m still on the fence about it since by the time I’m ready to have children it would be around 40 years after [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain died but I still worry if it’s too soon since it’s a very unusual name over here.
It’s cool. All of your child’s peers probably won’t learn about the case until their teens just like I did. And even when they do they probably won’t learn the name of the baby till they’re adults and above making fun of it. It would probably go over the head of most adults too.
I don’t know how relevant my opinion is since I’m not from Australia, but I’ve never heard of [name_f]Azaria[/name_f] Chamberlain or [name_m]Hank[/name_m] [name_f]Azaria[/name_f]! I wouldn’t think anything of it if I met someone named [name_f]Azaria[/name_f].
