Is Beatrix different enough from Beatrice that if Beatrice continues...

Is [name]Beatrix[/name] different enough from [name]Beatrice[/name] that if [name]Beatrice[/name] continues to climb the ranks, [name]Beatrix[/name] will still feel distinctive?

I’m always wary of names that make huge jumps from year to year, and [name]Beatrice[/name] jumped over 130 places from 2010 to 2011. I’m anxious to see what 2012 looks. Looking at various trendy names, that’s always how it seems to start. I’m not overly fond of [name]Beatrice[/name], but I love [name]Beatrix[/name]. I’d hate for her to get lost among a lot of Beatrices. Am I being silly, though? [name]Beatrice[/name] will never reach top 200 or 100, will it?

I’m just worried it could become trendy. Thoughts?

If [name]Beatrice[/name] were to become trendy (and I can’t really predict one way or the other), then I personally would feel that [name]Beatrix[/name] is no longer special either. To me, once a name becomes popular, it no longer feels original, fresh, or pretty. I know a lot of people feel differently, but that’s my personal taste. [name]Beatrix[/name] is a great name, but to me it DOES feel closely tied to [name]Beatrice[/name], and would feel trendy if [name]Beatrice[/name] rose in popularity. If [name]Beatrice[/name] does climb the ranks, I will get bored with it and with [name]Beatrix[/name] along with it, even if NOBODY has a baby named [name]Beatrix[/name]. The similarity in sounds would cinch the deal for me.

Perfectly stated. I agree. I loved [name]Sophia[/name] since I was young - but since I’ve heard it so often it has become dull.
As for [name]Beatrix[/name] versus [name]Beatrice[/name] - IF it does become very popular, I suspect it will be similar to the rise of [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name]. I think that if [name]Beatrice[/name] does move up, [name]Beatrix[/name] will come trailing after it - just as [name]Isabelle[/name] did with [name]Isabella[/name]. And so yes, if [name]Beatrice[/name] becomes wildly popular, [name]Beatrix[/name] will probably lose some of its charm.

There is always [name]Bellatrix[/name] & even if it might be linked with [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. I still think it is awesome!!

Agreed. [name]Just[/name] like [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name].
[name]Bellatrix[/name] is an amazing alternative, but (sadly) the HP connection is the terrible one.

[name]Emma[/name] came to power via [name]Emily[/name], but they both feel like the same name to me. I don’t think this is the case with [name]Beatrice[/name], though, because I don’t think it will become that popular. However, if [name]Beatrice[/name] landed in the top 200, then yes, [name]Beatrix[/name] seems the same to me.

I don’t think [name]Beatrix[/name] would still feel fresh if [name]Beatrice[/name] jumped into the top 50. Anything less popular than top 50 is uncommon enough [name]IMO[/name] that it can still be seem fresh.

I think it is too closely associated. My daughter is [name]Beatrix[/name], and when I first introduce her, people hear [name]Beatrice[/name]. I have started saying “[name]Beatrix[/name] with a x” in situations where it matters. But if [name]Beatrice[/name] suddenly became popular, I suspect it would get much worse.

This makes perfect sense to me, and I agree that if [name]Beatrice[/name] gets to be top 50 or so then [name]Beatrix[/name] will have trouble. But it seems [name]Beatrice[/name] is still a long way off from that. If you love [name]Beatrix[/name], I wouldn’t let this concern stop you.

[name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] are very close for sure AND there aren’t many (any?) other names that are similarly similar. I do see both [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name] rising in the popularity ranks more but whether they will move up high enough to be considered trendy or overly popular is anyone’s guess. There are so many factors that lead a name to jumping into the top 100 or top 50 or top 10 that it is very hard to predict.

As for distinguishing between [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name]; I look to the pronunciation. [name]Beatrice[/name] is “[name]BEE[/name] ah triss” whereas [name]Beatrix[/name] is “BEET riks”: this way they are quite distinct.
