I love the name [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], and I have for quite a long time. It sounds similar too another of my favourites, [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], but has the space connection that makes it even more lovable, for me.
But I’m also a huge [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] nerd, as everyone who knows me knows, and it seems a bit like a one person name. [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is one of my favourite characters, but she’s not why I love the name, and I certainly wouldn’t name someone after her specifically (be that a child or a character).
So, do you think its usable? If you think it is usable, what kind of name would you pair it with? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] or [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]?
Personally I don’t think [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is that usable. I’m also a huge HP nerd which might impact my response, but also I think most people have at least a passing knowledge of the books or the films, and [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is such a distinctive name and character.
I prefer [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] anyway, but also I think it’s more usable as it is far less associated with HP.
I’m also a HP fan, and don’t think [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is usable (which saddens me because I also think it’s a beautiful name). [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] isn’t as obvious a reference as [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is, and is still beautiful. I’m curious as to what any non HP fans might say though.
The name isn’ t ruined for me. There are far more obvious and common literary reference names that gets used all the time. Undoubtedly though at least some people will ask if it’s a HP reference. The great thing about this name though is you can dodge that reference by saying, “no I named her after a star.”
I do like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] more than [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] but I think they’re both great names!
Although it’s not my style, I’ve never read or seen [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], so I don’t have any negative associations with the name [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f].
I’m afraid I don’t think it’s usable - the meaning is overtly violent and the only association is an evil murderess from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
If you want an unusual -trix name, how about:
Amatrix (lover, sweetheart)
Viatrix (voyager)
Venatrix (huntress - an epithet of [name_f]Diana[/name_f])
I don’t think I would use it. I like a lot of [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] names, but [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is an exceptionally cruel character. It would be disappointing to have that character as the only or main association with the name.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are lovely, I think, although the pronunciations are less intuitive.
I love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and in my opinion [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is definitely a daring choice but not unusable (even though it’s not my personal taste), especially with a bunch of quite common nickname options like [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f] & [name_f]Trixie[/name_f].
I am also a very big fan of HP, and unfortunately I’d have to say that this name is unusable. Unfortunately it’s just too widely associated with Hp, and if everyone who knows you knows you’re big fan, they’re not going to believe you if you say it’s not because of the books.
However, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a personal favourite of mine. It’s cute, can be shortened, and doesn’t bare a distinct reference to HP, only people who are super fans will get it, and it’s not so exclusive to the HP books that you can’t get away with saying you named her after a star or whatever. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] carries some HP meaning, but is easily not recognizable as a name from those books.
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a safer bet than [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]
I think it could be useable, but I personally would not want to deal with the baggage and comments that might come with it. I really love [name_f]Bellerose[/name_f] as an alternative, and it sounds like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is a solid alternative for you!
I think [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is usable, actually, though I’d be wary of the HP association as it isn’t the nicest to say the least. Between [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], though I do like both.
I personally think that, yes, it is usable! I love [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]! It’s a beautiful, starry, witchy/magical name in my opinion. I know a lot of people would probably find it unusable because of [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] Lestrange, but that doesn’t bother me at all to be honest. I’m pretty obsessed with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and have always found [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] to be a very interesting character, so I’m just not bothered at all. If anything the HP association actually adds to the name for me. I also like how it’s unusual and unexpected while still feeling familiar, for the less adventurous namers, because of [name_f]Bella[/name_f] and it’s similarity to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] or [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]… I honestly can’t choose. I really love both! At the moment I’m leaning more towards [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] but I love both.
I love the name [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] as well but she was a pretty awful person in HP. Maybe your daughter can name her daughter [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] but for our generation it’s pretty well known
I vastly prefer [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] over [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], as a name. I’m also a huge HP fan, but over time Lestrange connection doesn’t bother me anymore (not that I forget her, I’ve just decided that it’s not a dealbreaker). [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] is a bright star in the sky. It has an awesome meaning. And ultimately, it makes a stunning name. I have [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] on my short list. If I don’t already love my combo so much, I have no problem considering [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] as a first name as well.
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is cool, I just don’t like it nearly as much as a name.
Usable [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I’ve only seen the first two HP films and that was a year or so after each one came out, so it’s been a while and I haven’t seen any of the others. So the connection isn’t really there.
Not to mention I do find the connection to the character kinda cool from what I’ve quickly read… A perfect example of a GP that only the bravest use. But still, usable.
