Is Briar a sweet and elegant choice or a tacky story name?!

Im pregnant for the first time and, although I’ve been focused on boys name, really do need to find a name for a little girl as well. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] really started to like the name [name_f]Briar[/name_f], i just love the sweet and delicate but at the same time strong sound. However I’ve become worried that she will be thought of as a trashy young girl for having a fairytale name.
Im really in love with the name, its just adorable!
I would pair it with:
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]/[name_u]Gray[/name_u]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_u]Bay[/name_u]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_m]Cove[/name_m]
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Adelle[/name_f]
and
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]
I love it with maybe a subset of [name_f]Briar[/name_f] and [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]. Also any other suggestion or feedback as well as opinions are greatly received!
What do you think?

I really dislike it.

Why, if you don’t mind saying?

I don’t mind [name_f]Briar[/name_f] - it’s quite sweet in its own way. I maybe wouldn’t pair it with an unusual word name ([name_m]Cove[/name_m]/[name_u]Bay[/name_u]) but it sounds cute with [name_f]Adelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Renee[/name_f]. Also, as I believe [name_f]Adelle[/name_f] & [name_f]Renee[/name_f] are [name_m]French[/name_m] that could be a sweet link with [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] too? I like it.

[name_f]Briar[/name_f] is a nice nature name.

I do not think of Sleeping Beauty. Actually I did not even know that Sleeping Beauty was [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] until a few years ago. [name_m]Even[/name_m] so, I do not think that is a negative. All names can be matched to a story, actor, musician, poet, sports star, character on tv or in the movies, etc.

I think [name_f]Briar[/name_f] is lovely (though not my style) and I don’t find it tacky at all. I kind of find it hard for a name to be tacky, but maybe that’s just me?

It does seem pretty tacky to me. I actually have a family member who named her baby [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. At first a lot of people disliked it and made all sorts of jokes about the name. But I think they’ve gotten used to it a little now that it’s associated with a real person. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the fairy tale association wasn’t there, [name_f]Briar[/name_f] means “a thorny patch” which isn’t great. If you are looking for a sweet nature name there are much better options out there.

It has a lovely sound! I posted recently about [name_f]Bria[/name_f], [name_f]Britta[/name_f], and [name_f]Briella[/name_f]… I love all of these types of names! Yes, [name_f]Briar[/name_f] does have the fantasy association, and it is not very common. However, if you are in love with the name, go for it! It will be unique, and your daughter could use [name_f]Bria[/name_f] if she wants another option. Overall, a beautiful, whimsical nature name! I certainly do not think of it as trashy.

One thing you could do, if you are at all concerned, is to give a slightly more traditional middle. [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] definitely works. [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_u]Bay[/name_u] and [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_m]Cove[/name_m] are a bit much for me personally, and do not really lend a professional side to the name.

It sounds like you are really loving [name_f]Briar[/name_f], and I hope it works out for you! If it does end up getting knocked off of the first name list, I would encourage you to consider keeping it as a middle option. Good luck!

[name_f]Briar[/name_f] is a lovely name. I do immediately think of Sleeping Beauty, but that’s not a bad thing at all! I think [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is gorgeous <3

Thank y’all for all ur feedback!!

I agree. A name would have to be really bad in my opinion to be tacky, like the combo [name_f]Cherry[/name_f] [name_f]Divine[/name_f] (sounds like a working girls name). The names I have seen called tacky have not been even close to tacky in my opinion. I think tacky is an in word (at least for younger people), like the word trendy. I think often time tacky and trendy is used instead of saying they are not fond of a name.

I’m coming in a bit late but I can absolutely picture a young girl as ‘[name_f]Briar[/name_f]’. I don’t think its tacky at all. Tacky to me is a made up or way too uniquely spelled name. If you had said [name_f]Bryar[/name_f] or something like that then yes! But [name_f]Briar[/name_f] looks and sounds solid and sweet at the same time. Plus, no offense, but the sleeping beauty/[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] connection won’t register with kids these days and the connection is tenuous at best. Also, I don’t think that makes it tacky anyways. There are kids named [name_f]Snow[/name_f] which seems more crazy than [name_f]Briar[/name_f]. In any case, the name grows to fit the person.

P.s. I love [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]/[name_u]Gray[/name_u] or [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Adelle[/name_f]

I adore the name [name_f]Briar[/name_f] and think its beautiful, [name_m]Ive[/name_m] heard it many times and have never associated it with anything trashy at all. [name_f]Do[/name_f] it!

I think [name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is nice. I don’t think [name_f]Briar[/name_f] is tacky, but I wouldn’t pair it with any other word or nature names like [name_u]Bay[/name_u], [name_m]Cove[/name_m], [name_u]Gray[/name_u] or [name_f]Fleur[/name_f].

[name_f]Briar[/name_f] is fabulous - I fail to see how it’s any more tacky than any other nature name? (hint: it’s not) I wouldn’t personally pair it with a second nature or word name, but that’s just me. Definitely not tacky, though. especially in a world where thing like [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u] are so popular.

I see briars as things that cut you, like thorns. I’ve never understood how that could be attractive as a name.

Well all I see in [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] is the word Scar and I’ve never understood how that could be attractive - that doesn’t make it tacky, though.

To me it’s more masculine. I prefer it on boys. I think it could work on a girl if paired with a feminine middle name.

I didn’t say it was tacky. I just don’t care for it.

I think as long as you avoid [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or anything [name_f]Rose[/name_f] like as a mn [name_f]Briar[/name_f] is a charming, spunky and classy choice.
[name_f]Briar[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is just so Disney that I’d expect mom hoodwinked dad into the name without him knowing that is was Sleeping Beauty’s… lol.
