I really like [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and if the baby is a boy, I am seriously considering it, but I’m worried people will just think of [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the friendly ghost straight away and will not take it seriously.
I really like the combo [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]. But it is too friendly ghost?
I’m sure you will get comments about the ghost from some people, but it’s been a [name_m]LONG[/name_m] time since any of those movies came out, and it’s not like he was an UNfriendly ghost or bad character in any way. I’m strongly considering it for my baby (also due in [name_u]July[/name_u]!). If it’s going to bother you if people make that association, I’d say don’t use it, but I don’t think people won’t take it seriously. Especially considering all the other unusual/weird/unique baby names out there these days.
I’m thinking if we do use it, we’ll just lean into it and dress him up as a ghost for his first halloween.
I think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] is nice! No idea what we’re going to use as a middle, I just posted about it yesterday!
Pretty much agree with PP, and it’s honestly not like CTFG is a bad association. Kids nowdays don’t really know who [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is, so I think you can. If not, you could always use [name_m]Cas[/name_m]par.
The only reason I know of [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the Friendly Ghost is because of people asking about it on Nameberry, so I definitely don’t think it’s a concern!
I really like [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] is lovely!
I think any gentle teasing would come from people your age and older to you as the parents not to your child whose friends won’t know or care about it. I love ther name [name_m]Casper[/name_m]. If it’s too risky for you, [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] or [name_m]Anders[/name_m] are other names you might like.
I agree with others that any teasing would come from folks your age or older who are familiar with the movie - kids these days won’t get the association. I often find adults more likely to tease about most names, regardless - you do you! It’s a lovely name!
I know an 8 year old [name_m]Caspar[/name_m]; it’s a fantastic name and I love [name_u]Cass[/name_u] as a nickname. You could switch to [name_m]Kasper[/name_m] to mitigate the ghost connection, although I don’t think it’s necessary.
Yes it’s the first association I make. Yes people will make comments. If you are ultra sensitive, I say don’t use it. However, like other posters have said, the character was meant to be charming. I used [name_m]Rudolf[/name_m]- yes the red nose reindeer. For about a day I was concerned- then I realized because [name_m]Rudolf[/name_m] isn’t used much in the US, people mainly associate it with the reindeer, it’s not a bad thing. So, yes light hearted jokes from.adults, sometimes just trying to make conversation. It’s really not a big deal
I have a friend named [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] and honestly I don’t even think about the character anymore. I thought I would at first, but now the name fits them so well that’s it’s just become normal to me.
The friendly ghost is why I can’t use it (I’d have the stupid song stuck in my head all the time) but I don’t think it’s a reason that other people shouldn’t use it if they don’t see it as a problem. I agree that the association is a bit dated now and I doubt that my 16 or 11yo sisters know about it.
It is the first association that comes to mind and I think it would depend on whether your son is shy and sensitive if it may bother him. We have no way of knowing that.
It’s definitely not as iconic of an association as it once was. A lot of kids I meet now are unfamiliar with the character. It’s totally usable and [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] is a beautiful combo!
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a great name and I love the nn [name_m]Kip[/name_m] for it. I agree with the pps - for some older people maybe the first reference, but it wouldn’t worry me. [name_m]Kasper[/name_m] is such a mainstream name in Scandinavian countries that I think plenty of younger people wouldn’t think of it as the main or first reference.
This question is coming up more and more frequently across message boards. That tells me that there are more people interested in using it and it’s overcoming any negative associations. It was on our list for our baby last year until my husband changed his mind, so I’m one of those folks! I think you are not only safe to use it and would be one of the earliest adopters to do so! I say go for it!
[name_f]IMO[/name_f] it’s a dated association and not even a bad one. I don’t see why it’s a big deal. Seems like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] the Grouch would hinder [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] more but it doesn’t.
I don’t think the ghost association is a problem at all - I’d use [name_m]Casper[/name_m] in a heartbeat (unfortunately my other half does not agree!). Adults will have mixed feelings, but I doubt children will have any idea about the cartoon. It’s a fantastic name.
I adore [name_m]Casper[/name_m]! It’s one of my very favorite names, and I could easily see me having a little boy named [name_m]Casper[/name_m] one day! I adore the nns [name_m]Cas[/name_m] and [name_m]Cap[/name_m], too. (I think the [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] spelling is equally lovely!)
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is on my own list, but [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] is super lovely, too!
I’ve never seen the [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the Friendly Ghost videos, but I know the associations do abound, and I hear jokes every now and then about it. I personally love [name_m]Casper[/name_m] because it was so dear to a very good friend of mine (before she passed), and it feels like a very special way to honor her, plus the [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] associations! My sister and I both have [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] names ([name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f]), so I like the idea of passing down more [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] names to further generations, too. Plus, [name_m]Casper[/name_m]'s just amazing! I love him.
I hope you do use him–the world needs more Caspers in it!
