[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I read the book The Hunger Games I’ve had a crush on the name [name_m]Cato[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that the name [name_m]Cato[/name_m] will be forever linked with the character from District 2 or will that connection eventually fade into obscurity.
Also what are some middle names that you think could go with it?
Speaking from a fan of the Hunger Games, I would definitely first think of the book because that was when I first heard the name. Despite that however I don’t think it is ‘too Hunger Games’. The character was around for only the first book so the name didn’t get a lot of publicity. Most people I suspect will not even realize where it is from. That being said, I think it is totally usable!
For middle names: I think [name_m]Cato[/name_m] should probably be grounded with something a bit longer and more common/more recognizable.
To be perfectly honest, I had no idea he was a Hunger Games character- most people who will realise will be ardent fans who will most likely be about 13-16 years old on average, so I don’t think it is a problem. Also, [name_m]Cato[/name_m] was a legitimate name prior to the series ([name_u]Kato[/name_u] was my Japanese nana’s maiden name), so it isn’t as if you are considering a name unique to the series (e.g: [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f] and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f], etc. I think that is how you spell them?).
I think it’s fine as a first or middle name. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of Jacks in movies/books so no reason to not use a less common name in a movie/book. Though I agree I would struggle a lot with accepting names such as [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f]… [name_m]Cato[/name_m] is still short, simple, unique but ‘real name-ish’. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], [name_m]Torin[/name_m], [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] off your list too.
I find the name to be very much usable. The Hunger Games character is quite obscure to the average person and, unlike [name_f]Katniss[/name_f], the name wasn’t invented for the series but has been existence since antiquity. There were two well-known statesmen named [name_m]Cato[/name_m] in Ancient [name_m]Rome[/name_m], [name_m]Cato[/name_m] the [name_m]Elder[/name_m] and his great-grandson [name_m]Cato[/name_m] the Younger.

I don’t think [name_m]Cato[/name_m] is too tied to the Hunger Games at all. I think only die hard fans are going to notice, and that would be tied to a certain age group I would imagine.
I agree with others that it’s a legit name before the books/movies. It’s not like [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] or [name_f]Renesmee[/name_f]. That being said, even though I’ve read all the books, [name_m]Cato[/name_m] still first reminds me of the guy that was driving OJ [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] in his white [name_m]Bronco[/name_m]! Or maybe I’m just old.
Not too hunger games at all (have read them all a few times). Your child will make it their own anyway and you’ll forget about the hunger games connection. Is a strong historical name that means intelligent/shrewd/all knowing. Many will associate it with roman history not hunger games!
[name_m]Cato[/name_m] or [name_u]Kato[/name_u] are real names, not made up by an author for his series, you’re fine as long as its not too linked for you.
First thought: ancient [name_m]Rome[/name_m], second thought: [name_u]Kato[/name_u] [name_m]Kalin[/name_m] (OJ trial), 3rd thought: What’s it got to do w/that weird movie? I must be getting old.

[name_m]Cato[/name_m] is a lovely name. Strong, simple, uncommon but easy to pronounce.
I don’t believe [name_m]Cato[/name_m] is too strongly associated to the Hunger Games. That was my first thought when you posted the name, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. Plus as other posters have said, he wasn’t a main character, so it’s not like his name/character are common knowledge, whereas people who aren’t familiar with the series still might recognize the names [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] and Peeta. I didn’t know about the OJ [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] association though, and I would hesitate to name my child anything associated with that man.
I’d love it if Cato started making a splash. What a great name! And no, it’s not too Hunger Games. Recognizable by fans, but it’s too great of a name to be swayed by that, imo.
