Is Claudia worth bringing up?

Even though we already have our #1 name for each gender set in stone, I still want to make sure we have at least a couple other combos we can agree on, just in case. SO and I have… VERY different tastes when it comes to names, so it’s always a delicate balance trying to find things we both like. But there’s one name I’ve been keeping close to my chest for a while now, and that’s Claudia. I love Claudia so much, I don’t even want to mention it to him unless I think there’s a possibility he’d like it!

The problem is, I think it’s one of those names that can be a hard sell for some people. So I thought I’d ask here:

  1. Do you think it goes with other names SO likes (Emily, Molly, Annie, Star, Kimberly, Thea, Sylvia, Tess, Lola, Caroline, Summer, Delilah)?
  2. How would you convince someone to love Claudia? What are its best qualities?
  3. Are there any pop culture references this name conjures up? These can really make or break names for him! For example, he vetoed Fiona because of a character he dislikes, but he approved Annie because of a character he does like!

To Question 3: [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] Kishi from The [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Sitters Club! She’s absolutely a good association imo - she’s cool, artsy, fun, sweet, and sassy. I’d be excited to share a name with her if I were a little girl!

  1. Absolutely! It seems very similar in style to me, especially with [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], and [name_f]Delilah[/name_f].

  2. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] is well known and easy to spell and pronounce, yet a little [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] is unlikely to have to go by her last initial because it’s pretty uncommon currently. The nicknames [name_u]Claude[/name_u], [name_f]Claudie[/name_f], and [name_f]Cece[/name_f] are very sweet. It ages very well, fitting a young child and an adult.

  3. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] from The Babysitter’s Club books!

[name_f]Claudia[/name_f] is a very sweet name! I think it does go with some of his favorites, I get an air of [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], & [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] with the name [name_f]Claudia[/name_f].

I’m not sure if you guys are bilingual, but this is a name that can be said easily & beautifully in both of my languages, [name_f]English[/name_f] & Spanish. So I guess that’s a plus if you have Spanish relatives/friends/or even neighbors! [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] can also have a ton of fun nicknames, like [name_f]Cloudy[/name_f], [name_f]Claudie[/name_f], [name_f]Dia[/name_f], etc.

Another plus, as a previous poster mentioned, is that she would most likely be a fresh name in a sea of Ava’s & Olivia’s. It’s a pretty well-known name, I hope he does end up loving it!

It’s definitely worth bringing up! I love [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and it goes perfectly with your SO’s other favorites. [name_f]My[/name_f] association with it is also Babysitters Club!

I’ve loved [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] as well for a very long time…ever since seeing [name_u]Anne[/name_u] Rice’s Interview with the Vampire!

Despite the not-so-great meaning (bad meanings don’t make names unusable IMO), [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] has a very rich history from the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] era that I appreciate. I also like all of the pronunciations, but especially pronouncing it like “Cloud-ia”, because it sounds so whimsical and dreamy. :sun_behind_large_cloud: :sun_behind_large_cloud:

My dad and a lot of his family speak Spanish, it’s not a top priority for names to work in both languages, but it is a bonus for that reason!

Also I love how many people’s first association is Babysitter’s Club – I think that’s part of the reason I’ve always loved the name!

  1. I wouldn’t say [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] is the obvious choice with all of your SO’s choices, but his list is also quite eclectic, so I don’t think him liking it is impossible. I could see it working with [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

  2. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] to me is a name that’s very familiar but fairly underused too. It’s strong but feminine, with the nicknames Claud/e, [name_f]Dia[/name_f], [name_f]Cece[/name_f], [name_f]Claudie[/name_f], [name_f]Dee[/name_f], so it’s versatile too.

  3. No [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] immediately leaps to mind, except the wife of a YTuber I watch, but that’s pretty niche

I’m not sure that I’d really expect your SO to like [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] based on his other choices, but his list is rather varied so I think it’s worth mentioning [name_f]Claudia[/name_f]. I can’t think of popular references that’d make [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] unappealing (like Fiona’s unfortunate association with Shrek).

Maybe you could make a list of 4-5 names you like, including [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], and ask him what he thinks about them. Maybe that would feel less intimidating than just asking his opinion on [name_f]Claudia[/name_f]?

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Claudia[/name_f]! I think it’s a truly hidden gem very similar sounding to so many of today’s most popular names (Sophia, [name_f]Mia[/name_f], Olivia) but it’s unique and very underused.

It is a bit similar sounding to your SO’s choice of [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] feels very refined to me, fresher than [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], sweeter than [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], a bit more interesting than [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (a top 10 favorite of mine!) overall gorgeous name:)

  1. Yes. Especially with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

  2. It is a very old name with lots of history (just maybe don’t tell him about its meaning  ). It’s international. I know it is used in [name_f]Italy[/name_f], [name_u]Germany[/name_u] etc.

  3. “Interview with the Vampire” (book and movie)

I think it’s pretty.

Definitely bring it up! He might go for it. His style seems eclectic.

While I also read The Babysitters’ Club and liked [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] from the books, there are two other great associations that come to mind. The heroine of From The Mixed-Up Files Of Mrs. [name_u]Basil[/name_u] E. Frankweiler is named [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], and she’s fantastic. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] [name_f]Janney[/name_f] played [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] “C.J.” Cregg on “The [name_u]West[/name_u] Wing”, and she was a great character. There’s also a [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] mentioned in the Bible.

He’s obsessed with The West Wing! It’s his favorite show, he has a copy of the pilot script signed by the cast and everything. I’ve only seen a little bit and didn’t realize CJ’s name was Claudia! This could definitely work in my favor, haha.

That’s fantastic! Maybe he could even call her C.J. as his special nickname for her. I hope this works out for you! Keep us all updated on whether you get to use it!

  1. No, it feels very different to the names he likes. It’s grand and bold while I’d say his favourites are more light and lively.
However, many people like different things, maybe the -ia ending that’s similar to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] or that strong K sound that’s also present in [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] could be a hint to him liking the sound of [name_f]Claudia[/name_f].
  2. Personally, I like the chic, strong vibe it has paired with its internationality; it’s very much an adult name to me, meaning it really shines on an adult while one might prefer a sweet nickname for a child (Claudy, for example).
