Being realistic, do you think it’s usable and will just be asking for trouble? I love the way it sounds and [name]Darcy[/name] (another love) seems out of the question as it’s a ‘girl’ name now.
I don’t think [name]Darwin[/name] is too out there. I think i would only be an issue if it was unheard of or if people would be unsure of its pronunciation. I’m sure that within 10-15 years it will be up there with all the other place names which are taking over people’s lists. If you’re confident with it, then others will catch on. Good luck!
Of course these are things parents don’t want to think about, but [name]Darwin[/name] feels pretty ironic on a less intelligent boy or a clumsy boy.
Definitely not. I know a few people with this name. I think it’s actually a nice name and I don’t see any problem with it.
I agree that it’s a nice sounding name with a good meaning. However, it will ALWAYS be associated with [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name] and his theories of natural selection & evolution. If you don’t mind that, it’s ok.
If you’re unsure, you could use [name]Dawson[/name] instead. it has a similar sound, but different associations, though it is more popular.
or if you have a kid with webbed feet, six toes or any other random physical mutation.
Though to the question. I actually really like [name]Darwin[/name]. I think it’s handsome and dashing and has that last name as a first name appeal that is popular right now.
[name]Darwin[/name] is a wonderful name. I don’t believe that it’s “too out there”. There will always be that association to [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name], but I honestly think that’s pretty cool.
I also really like [name]Darcy[/name], and I am also disappointed that it’s more of a girl’s name. I love Pride & Prejudice (:
Other names for a boy beginning with a “D” that I would suggest are: [name]Dalton[/name] and [name]Declan[/name] [pronounced Deck-lin].
I love [name]Darwin[/name]. I had it on my short list for middles. I feel it’s similar to [name]Dexter[/name]–kind of different, maybe a little nerdy, but in a way I find cool and usable.
We are considering using [name]Darwin[/name]. I think it is 100% usable. I would proudly name my child after [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name]. But then again, I live in [name]Canada[/name] where there are very few creationist. If I lived somewhere with a high population of creationist, I might avoid it. Fortunately, not an issue for me! I also like Darcy and would much rather see it used on a boy than a girl.
[name]Darwin[/name] is not too out there. though I think I would [name]Darcy[/name] over [name]Darwin[/name] any day.
Oh, how I would love to use [name]Darwin[/name]. I live in the Bible Belt, and my husband’s grandfather is a baptist preacher. While no one actually denies his theories, it would be seen as blasphemous for us to use [name]Darwin[/name] over a biblical name. I’m not religious, my family isn’t really religious, but my husband thinks naming a child [name]Darwin[/name] is a no-no.
[name]Darwin[/name]'s a cool name, go for it! If I met someone with the name, I wouldn’t find it remotely odd or off-putting.
I love [name]Darwin[/name]! Met a little boy by that name and he was really charming.
You could always put it in the middle, just in case, and then call him by it.
I think of the city before [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name]. I’m a [name]Christian[/name] but if someone else who wasn’t one used it, I wouldn’t be offended. It’s a nice and unusual name but with familiar sounds and actually I’d think it’s cool if I met a [name]Darwin[/name]. But given how much I love [name]Darcy[/name] (both the name and the character!) I’d definitely tell you to use it instead of [name]Darwin[/name]! I’ve never met a [name]Darcy[/name] of either gender but I think of it as a boy’s name. It seems to be one that can go any way: boy, unisex or girl depending on who you ask.
I really love [name]Darwin[/name]'s sound and smart, put-together vibe. I love its meaning, “dear friend”, and I definitely don’t think it’s too out-there to use. My one concern is what has been mentioned several times in this thread already: the association to [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name]. To some people, it’s a great association, and to others, it’s a terrible one. It’s a polarizing choice. And I honestly think it’d be awful to name a child [name]Darwin[/name] as a political statement or something such as that. While I think it’s a cool name, I think many, many Christians will always take offense at it, and while I’d like to see it used, I don’t know how usable it is. While I wouldn’t treat a [name]Darwin[/name] any differently than a [name]Josiah[/name] or a [name]Hannah[/name], I know quite a few people who would, and I don’t even live in the Bible Belt. If, with absolute certainty, you can say your son wouldn’t catch any grief from it, I would say go for it. But honestly, as cool as [name]Darwin[/name] is, it doesn’t seem very usable to me, sorry.
No, not too out there. It’s definitely tied in the mind to one person— same as if you were to choose [name]Edison[/name], for example. But I think [name]Darwin[/name] is great. He wasn’t the first or last to study evolution.
Not at all. I like [name]Darwin[/name] a lot. It’s on our list too and I can’t imagine a little [name]Darwin[/name] having any troubles with his name.
It bugs me that we live in a society where naming your child after an esteemed naturalist and scientist could be an issue. There is absolutely nothing offensive about [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name]'s name.
My first thought is “monkey”. I loved The [name]Wild[/name] Thornberry’s and I loved the character [name]Darwin[/name] but I can’t imagine that name on a human. It would be like naming a kid Flipper or [name]Lassie[/name]
Aside from that, I just don’t like the sound. I’d prefer [name]Darcy[/name]
When I was younger if you did/said something stupid you’d be called Einstein or [name]Sherlock[/name]. [name]Darwin[/name] could be in the same boat
And you just reminded me of the [name]Darwin[/name] Awards
My first thought was [name]Darwin[/name] awards as well… I think it’s a lot like someone else mentioned [name]Sherlock[/name], a one man name.
I’ve always associated [name]Darcy[/name] with the character, so it’s masculine in my mind as well. I say go for [name]Darcy[/name]!
