Is Ella too popular?

I love the name [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. It is a compromise from the previous name I picked out: [name_u]Campbell[/name_u]
I know [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is on the rise because of names like [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] becoming so popular but is this name:

a) Strong enough to stand alone
b) too popular
c) too cutesy

I also like the name [name_f]Etta[/name_f] but find [name_f]Ella[/name_f] much more feminine. I don’t like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] too much (sorry, guys)
I’d love to hear any suggestions, even if they have nothing to do with the name  Thanks!

According to Nameberry it was #12 last year. I love [name_f]Ella[/name_f], it is one of those names that I have loved since the 4th grade when I read [name_f]Ella[/name_f] Enchanted. I think that it is definitely strong enough to stand on it’s own. I have only ever met one person named [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and she is now around 23-24 years old. I guess you could try to find out if it is super popular where you live if popularity is an issue for you. By the way, I love your son’s name, [name_u]Bryce[/name_u] is a great choice! And I think that [name_u]Bryce[/name_u] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] make a great sibset!

Thank you very much! I tried to find the popularity but I ccouldn’t find it. Should I search something specific?

[name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is gorgeous. I do think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is pretty popular but in all honesty, I’ve never met one.

@csd267 - If you are located in the U.S. you can google top [name_u]Baby[/name_u] names in your state for 2012 and it will usually come up with the top 100 names in your state on the SSA website.

I looked it up and it is #12 :frowning:

Edited for privacy.

I know 3 [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s in the under 4 set. It feels even more common due to all of the [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]'s, [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]'s, and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s, but it is still a beautiful name!

a) Strong enough to stand alone: yes it is more than strong enough to stand on it’s own

b) too popular: for my liking yes, but to each his own.

c) too cutesy: no it isn’t.

If you want a less popular option maybe try [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]?
But from your tastes of [name_u]Campbell[/name_u]… maybe you might wanna try [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] or even [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] (a variant of [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f])

If you really like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] you could use a name that has ‘[name_f]Ella[/name_f]’ in it, like Elladora, [name_f]Antonella[/name_f], [name_f]Corella[/name_f], [name_f]Mariella[/name_f], etc…

I have met a few [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s. As a person who really likes names that are somewhat unique without being too weird, it is a bit too popular, but that doesn’t change that it’s a beautiful name. There’s a reason those names end up in the top, after all.

What about [name_f]Elle[/name_f]? I have a friend with that name, and I always thought it was awesome.

What do you think about [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_f]Elly[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f]?

I think giinkies idea of using [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a great idea if [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is too popular to your liking.

I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is beautiful name, strong enough to stand on it’s own. It is very popular but popular names are popular for a reason. If you would like a less popular way to get [name_f]Ella[/name_f] you might consider…

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Noelani[/name_f]
[name_f]Odele[/name_f]
[name_f]Orella[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Roselle[/name_f]

It’s strong enough to stand alone.

It’s never too popular if you really love it.

Not too cutesy.

My sisters name is [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and we both think its lovely. You will meet a few other [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s in your life time but I still think its a lovely individual name!

I am actually shocked that it is #12. I have only ever met 2 little [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s. I knew a wonderful elderly lady named [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and that is enough to ensure that I will always love the name. [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is truly beautiful! In case of classics popularity doesn’t bother me so much. For example, I will never tire of names like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m]!

I honestly do not think it is too popular to use. In [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] I knew 2 Ellas. They are both 4 now. I know another [name_f]Ella[/name_f] that was just born. In my opinion, if you are going to use [name_f]Ella[/name_f], I would not choose the middle name [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I know quite a few [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]'s in the south. I think it depends on the region you live in…

I like the name and don’t think it’s too cutesy. However, it does seem a little popular for my taste. I know of several plus similar sounding names…

  • [name_f]Ella[/name_f] (2), both are just named [name_f]Ella[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] (3), one is short for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], one is actually [name_f]Elle[/name_f] but called [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and I’m not sure on the third
  • [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (2), I can’t believe I know two [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]'s because this name isn’t that popular yet
  • [name_f]Emma[/name_f] (2), ok so it’s not as similar as the others but it still starts with an “E”, is 4 letters and 2 syllables.
  • [name_f]Etta[/name_f] (0), I’m thinking it’s just a matter of time

So, I guess it feels more popular than it is. I know so many [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Katy[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Catie[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] combos. They all feel the same to me. But if you love it and want to use it, then do it. Also, [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is super popular where I live - both as a first name and middle. So maybe, use one popular and pick another that is a little more unusual?

Other suggestions…

  • [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (I had a cousin who went by “[name_m]EB[/name_m]” very cute and I never met another one, and still gives a formal name)
  • [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (I know a girl who goes by “EmJ” so cute on her too…ok I promise no more initials)
  • [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] (could do [name_f]Lally[/name_f] as a nn)
  • [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Cassie[/name_f])
  • [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
  • [name_u]Shea[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Tori[/name_f])
  • [name_f]Zara[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Tillie[/name_f])
  • [name_u]Reese[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Macy[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mattea[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Maya[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Willa[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Norah[/name_f]

Best of luck and congrats!

My name is [name_f]Ella[/name_f]! My parents named me [name_f]Ella[/name_f] a few years before [name_m]John[/name_m] travolta named his daughter ella, which is when it started to get big, I think. In all honesty I only know one other [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and that’s my little sisters friends little sister. In my elementary school there was only two [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s, and I’m the only one in my high school, which has over 1500 students. I think that it’s definitely strong enough to stand as it’s own. I don’t think it’s too popular (as I said before) and a lot of [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s now a days are [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Ellen[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s, etc. I’ve asked parents who call out [name_f]Ella[/name_f] in a store if that’s her full name, and they often say, no, it’s actually [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. I don’t think it’s too cutesy, but it’s cute enough! My friends have always given me cutesy nicknames, but most of them can come with any name (EllaBoo, EllaBella, EllaBellaCinderella, and EllaBlue) Some of my nicknames are [name_f]Ell[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-Latte (my mom called me that, and I’ve been in love with lattes ever since my first one! She didn’t even know they were a thing until I got in to coffee!) I think you should go for it, but my opinion might be a little biased, since it’s my name and all :stuck_out_tongue:
