Is Elzie usable?

Curious on the thoughts out there for using Elzie as a given name?

Is it too nickname? Is it too dated? Will it be confused with Elsie? Or seen as a creative Elsie spelling? Or does it feel fresh and ready for revival?

It has a super sweet meaning and checks several of our boxes, just a little un-completely-sold.

TIA

It will be confused with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and seen as a creative spelling of that name, yes. That’s absolutely what I would have thought if I heard the name anywhere before right now.

Elzie makes me think of Elsie and think that it is a variant of that, rather than a short form of Eliezer. But once it is explained, it makes perfect sense, although I prefer it as a nickname. Eliezer (and Eleazar for the matter), feels fresh and very wearable to me.

I do think it could be seen as a creative sp of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] / confused with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], but that doesn’t mean it’s not usable

This is how I feel! Definitely not unusable in my opinion — lots of names are commonly confused for other names.

I don’t think it feels at all dated, and if [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] can work as a full name then there’s no reason why [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] would be too nickname-like! I do think it would get confused with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], and I likely would assume it was a creative [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] spelling if I saw [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] as a full name – that doesn’t make it unusable though! I think it’s a sweet name :yellow_heart:

I had never heard of [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] before, but I see it’s a nickname for [name_m]Eliezer[/name_m]. If [name_f]Baby[/name_f] is a boy, having something so close to a girl’s name and being mistaken for a girl because of it, might be tough.
Giving the child the full name Eliezer might help avoid confusion. Teachers and others will know [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] is a nickname and think of that full name before hearing [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. It would also give [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] another option as they get older.

i actually prefer elzie to elsie! it would be misheard a few times, i suppose, but not terribly where elzie would never get the name right! i adore elzie for elzbieta as a nickname, and alone is so sweet <3

I think it would be confused for [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and/or thought of as a creative spelling for it, unfortunately. I don’t think it is too nickname-y though!

I would opt for [name_m]Eleazer[/name_m] and use [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] as a nickname. If used on a girl, I would say it’s a little too nicknamey for my tastes, and would definitely be confused for [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (as proof, my iPhone just tried to autocorrect [name_m]Elzie[/name_m] to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] lol)
