Is Emily too "normal"?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries,
I’m looking for some advice on the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] please. My OH and I really like the name but I just feel that it is too normal and over used. We are both from the UK, both of us have large families (with a mixture of classic and unusual names), and I am a teacher (names can often be ‘tainted’ or ‘overly popular’).

My worry is that [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is too popular? We both like the name [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] but not [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and we both know lots of Emmas, so [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is out of the question.

Should we stick with the name we love or find a more interesting alternative? Likely middle name is [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].

Thank you.

I love [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and while it’s classic, it’s not super trendy right now. I would use it myself were it not for my husband’s part-rhyming ([name_f]Em[/name_f]) last name. In some ways it’s so classic that it’s not normal. It’s a gorgeous name!

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] is beautiful, timeless, and sounds great with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I would absolutely stick with it.

I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is too popular. I’m in high school, and in my grade there are 9 [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s and 8 [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s. The name has just gotten more popular since then. What about [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]?

[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is lovely but a friend of ours has a daughter called [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and where we are, the name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is even more popular than [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. Thank you though, it is a lovely name and I adore the [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] spelling.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] is classic and pretty.
It does sound close to the super popular [name_f]Emma[/name_f], but if that doesn’t bother you then I think it’s a great choice.
Would you also consider using [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] as a first name?

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is a classic name versus trendy in my opinion, which makes it more appealing to me (I try to stay away from the super trendy, popular) even though it’s at #8. My concern would be the “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]” factor. I hear [name_f]Emma[/name_f] everywhere I go in the US. I like [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] but there is the risk that [name_f]Emily[/name_f] could blend in with all the [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s and even get called [name_f]Emma[/name_f] herself. That’s. Tough one!

I do find [name_f]Emily[/name_f] to be rather boring. Not a bad name, just very overused. It’s not as bad as [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is in terms of popularity but the names are very similar.

Personally, I find [name_f]Emily[/name_f] to be a bit bland and dated at this point. It was sooo popular through the 90s that it’s on the cusp of being more of a “mom name.” That isn’t to say there’s something inherently wrong with the name. It just isn’t one I would use.

As for it being a classic, I don’t really count it as a classic. I think it might get there someday but to me it’s just not there yet. If the end goal is to use the nickname [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or some variation, there’s a whole slew of names I would jump to before I’d go with [name_f]Emily[/name_f].

I love the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (maybe bc it’s my sister’s name)! I think what people tend to forget when they’re choosing names is that their child could be named [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and he could be a unique and amazing individual and his friend [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f] is the most “normal” girl there is. So if you choose [name_f]Emily[/name_f], just know that you chose it because you loved the name and [name_f]Emily[/name_f] will make herself stand out and etc. All that matters is whether like the name or not, really.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] was ranked at No. 4 in [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m] in 2014 (I don’t believe the 2015 data has been released yet), and it has been very popular for the last 20+ years (it peaked at No. 1 in 2003-2004).

However, if you love the name and aren’t bothered by its popularity then I don’t see why you shouldn’t use it. It’s a classic name with a strong history.

I’m an [name_f]Emily[/name_f] born in the 90s, and I grew up rarely having to share my name with a classmate. [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] were always more popular in my area. I would recommend looking for statistics as specific to your area as possible. I will say that I’m always surprised to meet an [name_f]Emily[/name_f] under the age of 15. I think of it as a name belonging to my generation.

I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] was so overused that it became a little boring to me. It’s not a terrible name, it’s actually quite cute.

If you like it, you should definitely go for it, or see if there’s another less common name you like even better. She may get clumped in with all the Emmas, though. That’s the only thing.

If you like it, go for it.

I know lots of [name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s. But, it’s such a sweet classic name. If you both love it, I think it’s a great choice.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f]'s popular because it’s great - but if anything, it’s going down in popularity so becoming less ‘normal’, whatever that means!

Definitely use it if you like it!

Honestly? Yes, [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is too normal. It’s the Ambien of names.

Give your child a name with personality. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is like [name_f]Sara[/name_f] or [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] or the billion [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]'s.

Girl, you can do better. [name_f]DO[/name_f] BETTER.

Like, dude- [name_f]DO[/name_f] BETTER.

My parents named me [name_f]Emily[/name_f] in the 1970s and my mom heard over and over, “Oh, that’s an old-fashioned name! [name_m]How[/name_m] unusual!” She had this luck with all five of us kids. We all had unusual names that became wildly popular 10 or 15 years later. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I love my name, I would not recommend it for a baby born now. There are just too many of those 90s kids! I blame my mom for being such a trend setter.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is so beautiful! Honestly, people chase their tails in circles to find super “unique” names, forgetting that the name doesn’t necessarily make the child. An [name_f]Emily[/name_f] has just as much worth as a [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] or [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is a great choice!
