The name Emmeline was recommended to me on this website and I adore it! It’s not too common, it’s vintage, girly, sweet, and beautiful! And, I LOVE the nickname Emme. My only concern is that she might have to correct people from calling her Emily for her whole life. Do you think that this would be a major issue for an Emmeline? I have other names (Adeline, Raina, Genevieve) that I love nearly as much as Emmeline, and that might pose less of an issue. Do you guys think it would be an issue?
Absolutely not! I personally prefer [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] over [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
With the name [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], she has options! She could be [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], or use the nicknames [name_f]Emme[/name_f] or [name_f]Emily[/name_f]!
I think, while the names are similar, they’re different enough for it not to pose an issue!
My given name is [name_f]Stella[/name_f], and my mother was concerned it would be too similar to [name_f]Ella[/name_f], but I’ve only been referred to as [name_f]Ella[/name_f] a handful of times in my life. It’s never bothered me at all! I think it’s a similar case for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f].
So I think some people will mistake it for [name_f]Emily[/name_f] when they hear it, but it’ll be such a quick fix that I don’t think it’s a problem (“Oh no, its [name_f]Emme[/name_f]-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]”). I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (fun sidenote: there’s a book series called [name_m]Little[/name_m] People, Big Dreams that’s wonderful. It’s all about historic women–and there’s an [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] Pankhurst book).
My daughter’s name [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] pretty consistently gets mistaken for [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] (don’t ask me–anyone over 45 is pretty much the worst at names…), but it’s a quick correction and my daughter(5) has learned to clearly over-enunciate to head off confusion.
I think I commented on your other thread, but I think [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f] are distinct enough that it shouldn’t be a huge issue. There are always name mix-ups (she might get [name_f]Emily[/name_f], or [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], or [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]… who knows) because people don’t seem to LISTEN, but I think it’s an easy correction.
FWIW, the only one that I think doesn’t really have any close “sound-alikes” is [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] could be [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Raina[/name_f] could be [name_f]Shayna[/name_f], you never know what people will come up with.
I think one person in a while might mistake it for [name_f]Emily[/name_f], since it’s a much more name, but it’s familiar enough that most people will catch on. FWIW, my name is [name_f]Julia[/name_f] and I’ve had it mistaken for [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] when I introduce myself a few times, but it doesn’t bother me, and I imagine [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] will probably be a similar situation. A more pressing concern in my opinion would be pronunciation issues based on just seeing it written out: I’ve heard it both “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-line” similar to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen”. You may have to steer people in the direction of whichever one you’re going for quite a few times.
I think [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] is lovely! I also have a name that is sometimes confused for another but it only bugs me when it’s someone who makes the mistake repeatedly.
I love [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] - soft but full of flair and history. I think it might occasionally get mispronounced as [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but I think I could probably overlook that
I think there is enough difference. Also, there are two ways to pronounce it: emma-leen and emma-line.
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
My initial thought it was you have a daughter named [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and considering to use [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] to name your second.
I think she might get [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] much more than [name_f]Emily[/name_f], but I think this kind of pretty name need to be said & repeated with joy.
I pronounce it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen. Beautiful name.
Thank y’all for all of your help! If we used it, we would pronounce it [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leen. I think it is a front-runner now, definitely!
