I hope y’all are having a great [name_f]Monday[/name_f]!
As the title states, it has come to my attention that some people think [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] sounds pretentious, which means to believe you are of greater importance than you actually are. I’m wondering if this is for this specific spelling or the name in general.
To make matters more complicated I have a very common, very Spanish, very romantic-sounding last name, and I wonder if that makes things better or worse .
The numerology for [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] (if that matters) is 6, 1, and 5, which means loving, independent, and flexible.
I don’t think [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] is pretentious at all! I don’t know where you live but it’s decently popular in the US which makes it even less so. The only thing that I might perceive pretentious about it is if you really enforce the accented e because I could see friends and teachers dropping it to write “Esme” (I think I would be guilty of this too, at least where I live, accented letters aren’t common and [name_u]Esme[/name_u] vs [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] vs Esmè would all be about the same to me).
While I don’t know what it is, I don’t think that your last name would be an issue with [name_u]Esmé[/name_u]. It’s a great name, if you like it you should go for it!
I’m so confused why anyone would think [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] is pretentious do they just mean because it’s got an accent? I really can’t think of any other reason. It’s a lovely name, I haven’t met many but it strikes me as friendly and zippy
Don’t think so at all. That said, I do prefer the [name_u]Esme[/name_u] spelling and pronunciation (Scottish, Es-mie). But [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] is nice also.
I love that name. I’m considering using it as well. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks using this é is pretentious (as we are not French) so he prefers spelling it as [name_u]Esme[/name_u]. On the other hand, as someone who actually speaks a little bit of [name_u]French[/name_u], I prefer the original spelling.
For me, the accent is a little pretentious unless you are in a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking country. The name itself is not my style, but not inherently pretentious. It makes me think of A Series of Unfortunate Events (lol).
Huh, I’d never ever have pegged [name_u]Esmé[/name_u] as pretentious! It feels equal parts rural-earthy and storybook to me. I really like it, and I find it absolutely down to earth!
It doesn’t sound pretentious at all to me! I know an [name_u]Esme[/name_u] (no accent) who is a very kind human being. The only possible way it could come off as pretentious to my knowledge is if someone was a really really in-depth fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Otherwise I think you’re good.
