[name]Hi[/name] - I have always loved the name [name]Ethan[/name] and it has a lot of meaning for us in our family tree. But the name has shot up the popularity lists, and I’m wondering if it is just too popular and trendy now?
(my other favorite has always been [name]Jacob[/name], but my hubbie doesn’t like it and it’s right behind [name]Ethan[/name] on the lists! LOL.
My husband would like to use [name]Easton[/name] instead. I thought that that was a brand name of a sporting goods company, so I didn’t think it was anymore appropriate than ‘[name]Nike[/name],’ but he likes it.
Ironically, we don’t have a single friend or family member who has used [name]Ethan[/name], so we wouldn’t be stepping on any toes. So I say it’s fine to use.

… I think yes, but that is all up to you! Good [name]Luck[/name]!
I agree that it IS very popular but if you love a name, it shouldn’t stop you. The example I like to use is that there are less Isabellas today than there were Jennifers in the 80s. Although it’s the same popularity, there is a greater variety of names. I’m a [name]Jennifer[/name] and there was usually at least another one in my classes, if not more. But there’s less of a chance today of there being multiple Isabellas in a class if that makes sense. So although he will run into other Ethans, there will probably only be a couple in his grade.
[name]Easton[/name] is an ok name. I have family in [name]Easton[/name], PA, so to me it’s a city. But for some reason I’ve been fine with [name]Weston[/name]. Probably because I knew someone with that name in elementary school so it never seemed weird to me. I don’t have a problem with the name at all, I just wouldn’t personally use it. What about [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Everett[/name], [name]Elliott[/name] or [name]Evan[/name]? All are somewhat popular, but not in the top 10 or anything.
I love the name [name]Ethan[/name]! I hate the popularity but I am a teacher and I have never had an [name]Ethan[/name] in my class, but I have had lots of Jacobs. I don’t even know anyone with a baby [name]Ethan[/name] smaller than school age. So I don’t think it is really all that popular. If you really love it though I would not worry about popularity. You could also see where [name]Ethan[/name] ranks in your state because it could be lower on the charts in your particular area.
It’s very popular, but I’ve never met one ever. I think if you love it, use it. Your love for the name and the meaning it has for you is the most important factor in choosing a name.
So as [name]Jennifer[/name] explained above - the # 1 names today are used significantly less than the #1 names 50 years ago or so.
For [name]Ethan[/name]:
2010 #2: 17,866
2009 #2: 19,783
For [name]Michael[/name] in 1965 it was #1 and used for over 81,000 babies. BIG difference!
So popular today does not equal the [name]Michael[/name] and Jennifers of yesterday. Also if you love a name, you should use it. It’s SO hard to find a name you love!
I know it’s supposed to be super popular, but oddly enough I’ve only ever met one [name]Ethan[/name]. If it’s a family name, though, then go for it. It’s an interesting name!
To echo some of what pps have said, if it is a name you truly love (and can agree upon!!), I don’t think the popularity should necessarily deter you. The numbers definitely show that “popular” isn’t what it used to be.
Plus, I think popularity should factor in even less when it is a family name. We are currently living in [name]Sweden[/name] where [name]Oliver[/name] is #6, but we went with it anyway because it was my grandfather’s name and I wanted to honor him. Not that he should need ever to justify his name, but he will always have that connection to explain our choice even if there are tons of other Olivers out there.
I think [name]Ethan[/name] is a lovely name and you have great reasons for choosing it. Good luck with your decision!
If your goal is to choose a name that people will think is uncommon and unique, than yes, it’s too popular. But if you aren’t worried about that, then I’d use it. From my experience, most people in real life aren’t into names and barely put much thought into it. If you know a lot of Ethans in your family or circle of friends it will seem more popular than it is, but you can always end up having two friends use an uncommon name which would make that name that doesn’t even rank on the list seem popular… it’s all just random.
For all that [name]Ethan[/name] might be popular on the name ranking charts, I only know one (he’s five). I think name popularity really depends more on what’s popular in your area. If you don’t know any Ethans than I think it’s safe to say it’s not popular in your area so if that’s the only thing holding you back, you should go ahead and use it.
Waaaaay too popular. [name]How[/name] about [name]Eben[/name]? [name]Love[/name] this after reading a character in a book with this name. [name]Evan[/name] is nice too.
I love [name]Ethan[/name] & [name]Easton[/name]! They are both on our list for possible future sons names, along with [name]Emmett[/name] & [name]Elliott[/name]…I think we have a thing for E boy names lol.
It’s really popular, especially where I live. Apparently in Oregon, [name]Ethan[/name] is a huge name. I’ve only met one though. I also have a younger cousin named [name]Ethan[/name]. I think it’d be better as a middle name.
