I like this name very much, but [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield is the only association I have with it. I don’t know much about him, aside from the fact that he is a boxer, so it’s not a negative association, but do you think people would assume we’re big boxing fans if we were to use it? Would our kid constantly hear boxing jokes, or has Holyfield been out of the public eye long enough that this wouldn’t be an issue?
Yes, if you intend to use the full form without any nicknames.
But if you’re going to call him [name_u]Van[/name_u] in everyday life, I think it’s totally usable.
My first reaction was “Who?” so no you are fine
Honestly, unless you’re around people who are into boxing, no. I feel like it’s just not a very popular name and therefore he’s really the only public tie to it, that’s why people thinking of him, not that he’s actually closely tied to it. Does that make sense? Idk. I really love it, by the way!
I don’t think so. When I first added [name_m]Evander[/name_m], I didn’t even think of the connection. I think if anything, the association will only lessen.
I’ve never heard of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield. I don’t think anyone his age would either, especially since according to google he doesn’t box anymore, and anyway I wouldn’t let the association bother me.
I’ve got no idea who [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield is and I doubt that a lot of people will too. I don’t think people will assume you’re big boxing fans if you use it; people don’t assume that you’re a massive [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan if you use [name_m]Harry[/name_m].
I love the name and I had no idea who Holyfield was till I started looking into the name some months ago. I think you’ll be fine. It is unique and some people might associate the two, but it’s not shocking enough to matter.
First person who comes to mind for me is [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Kane[/name_m]. [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield will always be a connection with the name and always a figure in the public eye since [name_m]Mike[/name_m] [name_u]Tyson[/name_u] bit his ear. Its kind of an inevitable thing to draw away from but it’s not like people will make jokes about it. Maybe some depending on the person but I doubt it’d be a constant thing. There is also a wrestler named [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and an author named [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Law[/name_m]. Holyfield might not be the first association people make.
Here’s the thing: [name_m]Will[/name_m] people of your generation and up possibly think of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield? Maybe. [name_m]Will[/name_m] the kids that your future son grow up with think of this person when they hear his name? Not likely. You just have to think of who the association would bother more: you or him? The only people I can think of that’d bring it up is people who actually know who [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield is, which is a not going to be the people of your son’s generation.
I think it depends where you live, who’s in your social circle, etc. I eliminated [name_m]Evander[/name_m] from my own list because he’s too tied to Holyfield. However, I live in an area where lots of people are super into boxing, wrestling, etc. Also when considering [name_m]Evander[/name_m] I already had a son named [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] that people associate with [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Lennon[/name_u]. I didn’t want people thinking we purposely name our kids after famous people we admire and that [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield is one of those people. Nothing against him… we know nothing about him so have no real feelings about him positive or negative.
Anyway, I think it’s a really handsome name and I want to support people using it and moving beyond the Holyfield association. But I figured I needed to be honest and tell you why it was too much for me personally.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! Big brother is [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], nn [name_m]Enzo[/name_m]. [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Enzo[/name_m] and [name_u]Van[/name_u]/[name_m]Vander[/name_m]. Thoughts on the potential sib set?
I hadn’t heard of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield until two minutes ago, when I googled him after having read your post, so I think you’ll be fine. I’ve had [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Evander[/name_m] as a combo for a while, and no-one has made the association (at least out-loud) when I’ve told them. Unless you’re really into boxing, I think you’ll be fine.
Ditto this.
I agree with other posters that his generation most likely wont associate the name with Holyfield.
I don’t know much about Holyfield, so I dont think of him when hearing the name. I know of him, but hes not too strongly tied to the name in my opinion.
I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is so handsome, I really love the name. I also think [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] & [name_m]Evander[/name_m] “[name_m]Enzo[/name_m] + [name_m]Vander[/name_m]” make the sweetest set of brothers.
