Is Everett to close to Everest?

I’m starting to really love this name as a first name!

I pronounce it Ev-uh-rit/ret, is that correct?

I feel it’s unique but not too out there and it’s a vintage gem. My biggest concern is that it sounds so similar to Mt. Everest :frowning: it would be a quick correction if someone thought I or Everett himself stated that his name was “Everest” but the similairty is what really has me on the fence. Otherwise it’s a perfect name to add to my list!

Any opinions/thoughts etc. will be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

I will be honest, when I hear [name]Everett[/name], I get visions of frosty winds and bushy mustaches… in an endearing way! My brain does meld [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Everest[/name] together.

I think that they’re obviously close, but that’s kind of like saying that [name]Claire[/name] and ‘clear’ are too close… I don’t think it matters. While similar in sound, I’m not sure there’ll get confused too often.
Actually though, I have a friend whose sister had decided on [name]Everest[/name] but everyone thought she’d picked [name]Everett[/name] (she had a girl in the end). I think there’ll be more people who get [name]Everett[/name] right than people who get it wrong and think it’s [name]Everest[/name].

I would tend to think that [name]Everett[/name] is too classic to be mistaken for [name]Everest[/name] often. Like the pp said, it’s kind of like saying [name]Claire[/name] and ‘clear’ are too close. [name]Everett[/name] is a great name!

Around here (New [name]England[/name]) [name]Everett[/name] is a common name on street signs and buildings. To me, it is New Englandy, and I have never once thought about Mt. [name]Everest[/name].

I agree with pps. A. [name]Everett[/name] is a pretty well established name, so I don’t think most people are going to assume you picked something really out there over a more likely choice. And B. [name]Everest[/name] isn’t a bad thing to connote; it’s just this awesome, if dangerous mountain, haha. I wouldn’t stress over the [name]Everest[/name] thing at all!

Different names I would add it to your list :).

[name]Everett[/name]‘s one of our top choices for boys, but I too worry about the [name]Everest[/name] thing, though it’s not a bad thing, any form of a teasing is awful when you are little. I love [name]Ezra[/name] more, but my fiance’ likes [name]Everett[/name] more. I think, overall, it isn’t a name that leans to teasing but then again, I’m not sure how young you are when you learn about Mount [name]Everest[/name]…

My son’s name is [name]Everett[/name] and there has never been any confusion about how to pronounce it. He’s never been called [name]Everest[/name] by mistake. We love his name!

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone! and thanks to mamamegan841 for the real life example, definately adding [name]Everett[/name] to my list

i would pronounce everett exactly like everest, minus the S sound. Near where i live [name]Everett[/name] is a city. but maybe the city is pronounced differently than the name - either way, i wouldn’t worry about the everest association at all.

[name]Everett[/name] is my top pick right now!
My husband also says that it reminds him of [name]Everest[/name]. If people make the association, I don’t think it’s a big deal. If anything, I like the association as it makes me think of words like strong, tall, and daring. I don’t think that people are going to mix up the name with [name]Everest[/name] -the “s” sound is very pronounced.

Our son’s name is [name]Everest[/name] (which we [name]LOVE[/name]) and people will frequently call him [name]Everett[/name] bc it is more common.

I don’t think you will have a problem with [name]Everest[/name] and [name]Everett[/name]. You could give him a nickname if you wanted to minimize the confusion.

I used to live in the Seattle area of [name]Washington[/name] State, and there was a city named [name]Everett[/name] close by. It was pronounced the exact same as the name.

I don’t think it’s much of a problem. I think people generally think of the name and the mountain as two separate things. I myself have never thought of the connection until you mentioned it! I just think It’s a nice boys name

Good luck!!

I’d go with [name]Everest[/name]!

[name]Everett[/name] is a legitimate name, people are more likely to think [name]Everest[/name] it [name]Everett[/name] than [name]Everett[/name] is [name]Everest[/name], if that makes sense. I say it Ev-rit or [name]Ever[/name]-it, depending on how fast I’m talking. Like pp, I also know it as a city–I actually used to live there.

[name]Everett[/name] always reminds me of dark green, like evergreen forests; I never think of the mountain. [name]Even[/name] if people mistakenly hear [name]Everest[/name] sometimes, it’s not a big deal, everyone experiences that from time to time no matter what their name is. And [name]Everest[/name] has been used as a name, too, but [name]Everett[/name] is far more common. I think you should add it to your list.
