Is Finley more of a girls name?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],
So we are struggling to find a name for our baby boy who is due in [name_u]March[/name_u].
We have been looking at Celtic names and have considered [name_u]Finley[/name_u] with nickname [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. We could just pick [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but it seems to be lacking something as we have a short last name too.

We have also thought about [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Cian[/name_m] and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] but none of them we really love or we find a reason not to use them like associations with other people/movies etc.

So, I’m looking for opinions on [name_u]Finley[/name_u] for a boy and also any other name suggestions :slightly_smiling_face:. We live in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand and I had never known [name_u]Finley[/name_u] to be a girls name till I saw it on nameberry.

Any help appreciated as we really don’t have many ideas left. Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is pretty unisex and can be used for a boy or girl. I wouldn’t feel any qualms about using it-- it’s not like [name_u]Ashley[/name_u].

I adore [name_u]Finley[/name_u]. It’s all boy to me.

Finley is definitely more boy than girl to me, though I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a female Finley. If you like the Fin- sound you could also use Finnegan, Finbar, Finlo, Finnick, Finnian or Flynn. I love Lachlan and Ronan! Other suggestions:

I’ve seen a lot of -lee girl names going around, but [name_u]Finley[/name_u] still seems all boy to me!

I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] works for a boy. Another possibility for the full name might be [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m].

I love [name_u]Finley[/name_u]! To me it’s unisex leaning boy. It’s on our short list if we have a boy. I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nn!
The other full name for nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] I didn’t see mentioned is [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]

The only [name_u]Finley[/name_u] I’ve met is a boy. I think it works for either gender.

All boy to me!

Thanks everyone for the replies! It’s good to know that people don’t see it as being to feminine. Thanks for the other [name_u]Finn[/name_u] suggestions too, we would consider [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] as well

If I heard the name [name_u]Finley[/name_u] I would assume male.

Definitely boy. I assume many little Fins are actually [name_u]Finley[/name_u].

Absolutely not! It’s masculine and all boy! [name_m]Just[/name_m] because a name is used on a girl, doesn’t mean it’s no longer usable on a boy. If that was the case, people would longer use the name [name_u]James[/name_u] on boys.

[name_u]Finley[/name_u] is one of the few names I view as completely unisex. I’ve considered both boys’ and girls’ combos for it recently.

Might be out of the loop some, but I’ve always thought of it as a boy name. [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] is really good, too, though.

Where I live [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is pretty much exclusively used on boys, so I tend to think of it as a masculine name. That said, even if it’s used on girls where you live, it’s not a big deal [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Sharing a name with a girl shouldn’t be the end of the world for a boy. It’s a fine enough name, so go with it if you like it.

It seems like a boy name to me.

[name_u]Finley[/name_u] is pretty boy to me. Especially with the [name_m]Fin[/name_m] sound, it’s pretty masculine. I can assure you [name_u]Finley[/name_u] won’t have the same fate as [name_u]Leslie[/name_u].

I love [name_u]Finley[/name_u] for a boy, and dislike it for a girl. I also love [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]

I think [name_u]Finley[/name_u] on a girl is an American thing. Nameberry is very [name_u]America[/name_u]-centric.
