We’re expecting a girl in [name]December[/name]. This is number five for us and and our final one. We usually like Irish/Celtic/Welsh and Nature or mythology names. The names of my other children are:
[name]Orion[/name] [name]Johnathan[/name]
[name]Sage[/name] Elysium
Cerridwen [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name] [name]Audric[/name]
My husband loves the name [name]Fiona[/name]. I like it, but not so much the Shrek/Ogre princess reference. I would like to hear other peoples suggestions and or thoughts on the names we like so far.
I don’t think the Shrek thing is too strong. I think it will only fade. I have a little niece [name]Fiona[/name] and it’s been fine so far!
[name]Scarlett[/name] is not my favorite name in the world, but it’s fine. It does seem a little more popular than the rest of your set, especially for starting with the same sound (I think?) as Cerridwen
[name]Eris[/name] is too close to [name]Eros[/name] for me.
I like Daenarys but worry it would be really hard for people to “get” - but I suppose you’ve gone with Cerridwen so you’re not to concerned with that : D.
[name]Guinevere[/name] is wonderful, really like that for you.
[name]Fiona[/name] is one of my favorite names. I never saw Shrek and had no idea until recently that it was behind the recent spike in popularity of the name. I guess I’m out of touch because I would think of [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Apple[/name] before I would think of Shrek…!
Thanks for your thoughts on the names. Cerridwen (the way we pronounce it) is [name]Cara[/name]-Dwen. Though she goes by [name]Willow[/name] at preschool since it’s hard to pronounce for the wee ones. I never thought of the [name]Eros[/name] connection. [name]Eris[/name] is the goddess associated with the golden apple of discord (strife or chaos) and thought it might be fitting since baby number five was a surprise and a little over the top for me lol. I was concerned with [name]Daenerys[/name] and the problems with not knowing how to pronounce it. My husband’s name is [name]Daniel[/name] (dan) and I usually use [name]Eris[/name] or Eriset as my screen names so it’s like a mixture of our personalities. (not to mention I like the character in Game of Thrones).
First off, I love the name [name]Fiona[/name] (it’s in my top names, now if I could just convince DH that it’s great). I do not think that [name]Fiona[/name] is too much associated with Shrek. The first thing that comes to my mind with the name [name]Fiona[/name] is the movie the [name]Secret[/name] of [name]Roan[/name] Inish, a great movie with the main character having the name of [name]Fiona[/name].
I also like the name [name]Guinevere[/name] to go with your other children’s names.
If you’re worried about [name]Fiona[/name] being tied too closely to Shrek, you should probably take [name]Daenerys[/name] off your list, too. That’ll forever be associated with GoT since it was made up for the series and all.
[name]Fiona[/name] is fine, I don’t think of Shrek at all.
Good Point, but I don’t mind so much with [name]Daenerys[/name] since I like the character. What I didn’t like about [name]Fiona[/name] was that she was an Ogre [name]Princess[/name] lol. Thank for taking the time to answer my question.
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is lovely and goes beautifully with your other names. I’m also a fan of [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]. Since [name_f]Eris[/name_f] was a “bad” Greek goddess, I wouldn’t pick this one (discord, chaos and strife) I wouldn’t go with this one. [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] doesn’t seem to go, Daenarys is a little too GoT for my taste.
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is lovely! My mind went to singer [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f] first. [name_f]Finola[/name_f] is a close alternative, if the Shrek thing really bothers you, but I don’t think it’s a big deal.
My daughter’s name is [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], and while we do occasionally get someone asking if we got the name from Shrek (of course we didn’t), she really owns her name and I have absolutely no name regret. I think your other name choices are lovely too, but for obvious reasons [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is my favorite.
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. I do not think that the Shrek reference is too strong (because people are familiar with other Fionas). Also, the princess in Shrek is not necessarily a bad reference (she isn’t the villan).
Nope - [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] stands on its own to me.
But I completely understand. It really bugs me when pop culture references prevent folks from choosing names they like. For example I love the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] but would never choose it because of the video game (I have not played a video game in my life and it would be more of a reference to [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m] if anything) but of course it’s the first thing that some think of. Sigh.
On the other hand we are considering [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] for a MN for a daughter but well, you know…Hunger Games…and our first pick is [name_m]George[/name_m] for a boy even though the little [name_m]Prince[/name_m] was given this name last week.
I guess you have to decide if you want to deal with the occasional comment. I’ve been trying to figure out how to respond since [name_m]George[/name_m] will be the name if we have a boy and I’m sure someone will say: “Oh like the [name_m]Prince[/name_m]” or something, I would just say “Yes, we love the name so much that we felt we could deal with silly comments comparing him to the [name_m]Prince[/name_m]” or something like that to quiet them down. [name_m]Just[/name_m] as you could say:
“Yes, we loved the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] so much we felt we could deal with silly Shrek references”.
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a gorgeous name and not too Shrek-y at all. I’ve never understood why people worry about the ogre references—[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a fantastic character in that series and the whole point of her is to show that beauty is not just skin deep.
I love [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] would be a great combination. I love Danaerys on Game of Thrones, but it’s a little too pop culture-ish to stand on its own as a child’s name. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] might be better in the middle slot since it has so many strong Arthurian connotations. [name_f]Eris[/name_f] is the Greek goddess of discord, so I’m not sure I’d pick that mythology name, but it has a nice sound.
Cerridwen [name_f]Willow[/name_f] is awesome. (I love g(wen) names) Have you considered [name_f]Eira[/name_f], Eirwen, [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], [name_f]Rhonwen[/name_f], [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f], or Maiwenn?
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] is very nice, love [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] in the middle. Good luck!
I like [name_f]Carys[/name_f] Maiwenn too ! (care-iss may-wen) I have never heard of Maiwenn before now. It sound very feminine. But, [name_f]Carys[/name_f] sound close to Cerridwen in the first syllable.
I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]! I’ve seen all the Shreks multiple times, and I don’t directly associate [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] with it. I don’t think other people will too much either. The name has been around long before Shrek. I love your kid’s names! Especially [name_u]Orion[/name_u] and Cerridwen [name_f]Willow[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] would be beautiful!
