I’ve always loved the name [name]Forrest[/name] but I feel like its not usable because of the [name]Forrest[/name] Gump association. I feel like his generation won’t know about the movie and its not like [name]Forrest[/name] Gump was a bad person. Would you say it’s usable? [name]Do[/name] you like the name?
I’m not expecting a boy at the moment but I’m always thinking about names! [name]Sister[/name] is named [name]Nora[/name], the one I’m currently pregnant with!
I think we’re past the Gump association. I think [name]Forrest[/name] is great - a nature name, but a venerable old one.
[name]Forrest[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] IS a lot of “or” sound, pretty rhymey. Actually, I prefer [name]Forrest[/name] to [name]Nora[/name]. But [name]Nora[/name] is pretty and classic. If you’re set on [name]Nora[/name], might be good to check out some other brother names that don’t rhyme.
It’s very common in the South, because of its association with a Confederate general. I wouldn’t use it, because of the same association, as he later went on to become a founding member of the KKK. I think, however, if you don’t live in the South it’s usable.
I love the name [name]Forrest[/name]! But my boyfriend always vetoes it thanks to Mr. Gump. I do believe we have grown past the association, but he couldn’t disagree more. I figure the kids his age won’t know the reference so why does it matter? I think he’s more worried about a lifetime of Run [name]Forrest[/name] Run teases from his own friends… With all that I still think it’s handsome, earthy and awesome.
I still think of [name]Forrest[/name] Gump…but I wouldn’t let that stop me from using it because kids his age would not make that association. And I grew up in [name]Alabama[/name] and have never heard of the association with the Confederacy or KKK so I doubt that’s really common knowledge. Or what about [name]Foster[/name]?
Well, I recently watched the movie Lawless, and one of the main characters is named [name]Forrest[/name] (played by [name]Tom[/name] [name]Hardy[/name]) and couldn’t be further from [name]Forrest[/name] Gump. It has radically altered my perception of the name. Amazing how stories can do that, huh? Point is, I think [name]Forrest[/name] is slowly but surely losing the Gump influence.
I think it’s a usuable name. I would have it on my list, but my hubby finds all nature names ‘too hippie.’
However, I wouldn’t use it with [name]Nora[/name].
I like the previous suggestion of [name]Foster[/name].
Run [name]Forrest[/name] run… sorry i still think of the movie. Maybe his generation might not associate [name]Forrest[/name] with the movie?, it would be a bit of a gamble.
I like [name]Forest[/name] more than [name]Forrest[/name]. I never saw the point of the extra R
What? I’m a Southerner and that is not my first association nor have I ever heard anyone say they think of [name]Nathan[/name] [name]Bedford[/name] [name]Forrest[/name]. There are so many [name]Forrest[/name]/[name]Forest[/name] in history. [name]Forrest[/name] Gump is a far stronger association. And in the movie it’s stated that [name]Forrest[/name] is named after him but I’ve never met a real person with that story. Either the people I’ve encountered have a enough sense not to admit that they were named after him or- more likely- their parents chose the name because they just liked it
If we cut out all names with a Confederate and/or KKK reference nobody would use a lot of today’s popular names- [name]Archer[/name], [name]Harrison[/name], [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Miles[/name], and etc. [name]Forrest[/name] and these other men had common surnames so there is not a strong association with them.
[name]Nora[/name] and [name]Forrest[/name] would work for a sibling set. My name is [name]Nora[/name], and I may be biased, but I absolutely love my name! [name]Forrest[/name] also has a wonderful sound to it.
I agree with nat108. I like [name]Forest[/name] better than [name]Forrest[/name] and I also live in the south but wouldn’t assume that negative connection. Or even the [name]Forrest[/name] Gump connection at this point. That movie came out in 1994. I’d assume it was a nice nature name.
The double r will honor [name]Nathan[/name] [name]Bedford[/name] [name]Forrest[/name], and unless you’re really into the confederacy, i’d say no way [name]Jose[/name].
I am an ex-tennesseean and that was my first point of reference. A LOT of things in the south are named after southern generals, and [name]Forrest[/name] is a big one.
