Is Francis to Whimpy?

We are due very soon and still have no boy’s name. :eek:

We want to be surprised, but also ready with names… regardless. We have a girl’s name pretty much decided upon but the boy’s name is still way up in the air. I’ve always loved [name]Francis[/name] with nn [name]Frankie[/name]. Since the new Pope chose the name [name]Francis[/name] I can’t get it out of my head. My husband has vetoed it for a fn and says it sounds to whimpy. Can I have some feedback on your opinions of [name]Francis[/name] please! :slight_smile: Thanks!

Well, I don’t think [name]Francis[/name] sounds whimpy. What is his reasoning? It is kind of old fashioned and sounds strong to me. [name]How[/name] about using it for a mn?

Yeah, I think [name]Francis[/name] sounds wimpy. Sorry. I know a couple guys with the name and they never go by [name]Francis[/name].

[name]Franklin[/name], nn [name]Frankie[/name], is stronger. Granted, it’s not the name of a pope…

If you called him [name]Francis[/name], yes. But [name]Francis[/name] nn [name]Frankie[/name] is old school. I love it!

I think it does sound kind of whimpy/dorkie. Using the nn [name]Frankie[/name] or [name]Frank[/name] does give it a stronger sound [name]IMO[/name]. What about [name]Franco[/name]?

I love [name]Francis[/name] but don’t like [name]Frank[/name] or [name]Frankie[/name] at all. I don’t think it sounds wimpy but with the new Pope, I wonder how much of a bump it will get. I guess if you wanted to use a nn you could go with [name]Frasier[/name] but that just conjures up the [name]Kelsey[/name] Grammer character for me. [name]Franco[/name] is cute.

The [name]Francis[/name] I know was a [name]Royal[/name] [name]Marine[/name] so not wimpy! I’m a big fan of the name.

I don’t think [name]Francis[/name] sounds whimpy at all. I know 2 men named [name]Francis[/name] and they are very athletic and even a bit buley. I say go with it! I think it will be very popular though in the coming years with the new Pope taking the name. I also love [name]Frank[/name], [name]Frankie[/name] and [name]Franco[/name]. All really great nn’s!

I don’t think it’s wimpy at all! Granted, I prefer [name]Frances[/name] on a girl, but it wouldn’t kill me to see [name]Francis[/name] on a boy. If the ‘wimpy’ quality possibility bothers you, there’s always [name]Frank[/name], [name]Franklin[/name], or [name]Franco[/name].

I like [name]Frances[/name], but I don’t really think it’s “wimpy” as such. Since that is the name of a saint, how about some other saint names? Here are some ideas, not all names of saints, but some that have roughly the same feeling of [name]Frances[/name].

Thanks for the input everyone! I’m printing out your suggestions/comments just to bring it up to DH in the event we have a little boy. I’m nervous because it could be any day now and still no definate boy name!

I like [name]Francis[/name] on a boy well enough I think I’ve always associated it with a girl as my sister is called [name]Frances[/name], she goes by [name]Frankie[/name]. I plan to use [name]Frances[/name] as a middle name to honor the pope and her. I like it a lot.
