Hey everyone!
Have been loving the name [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] lately. Especially with the nickname [name_f]Evie[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Evie[/name_f], but want a full form for it and the only two I can really love are [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. But [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] feels a bit long and dramatic for me, and it doesn’t really work with my boys names.
I love [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], but I worry it’s a bit too closely tied to the city and the [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] Convention and the United Nations.
I also love how it works with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] go beautifully together in my opinion.
Is [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] usable? Does it remind you too much of the convention?
And is it a good way to get to [name_f]Evie[/name_f]?
It does remind me very very strongly of the convention, but to me that doesn’t make it unusable! It’s not really a negative association, just something that a Geneva would get some jokes about. Evie definitely works as a nn for her (but Jenny might be hard to avoid)
I have to admit, my first thought before even clicking on this thread was the UN. That being said, I don’t think that association makes it unusable, it’s not a negative association to me. [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] “Evie” works really well!
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] is solid, and I like [name_f]Evie[/name_f] a lot as a nickname. It is associated with the city (and the convention), but I don’t think those are bad associations. If you like it, go for it. It’s elegant.
I love [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] - bright, pretty and elegant but distinctive too! [name_f]Evie[/name_f] is sweet and intuitive too!
I do associate it with the city, but that’s because I love Frankenstein, and that’s what I think of
People may well associate it with the city, however it feels name-y enough for me that I wouldn’t assume she was named for the place. (kind of like with [name_u]Florence[/name_u], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Siena[/name_f], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_u]Kingston[/name_u], [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u], [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], [name_u]Austin[/name_u] etc - I’d acknowledge it’s a place name, but wouldn’t think too much on it)
Yes I have - I just fear its not intuitive enough for [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. I know it’s in the word - genEVIEve, but I just can’t get behind it as a full name for [name_f]Evie[/name_f]. I think even I’d call her [name_f]Genny[/name_f]!
Thank you!! That’s great to know that the association to the city isn’t that overpowering. I just worry because it’s also a human rights convention as well that the association would be too much, but honestly, it’s just such a gorgeous name.
I think it works really nicely with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] as well - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Geneva[/name_f].
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] is more commonly used as a standalone where I am, but idk, I like longer names…
What are your thoughts on [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Jillian[/name_f]? Is it an issue when one child has a nickname (Jill) and the other does not?
I don’t think it’s too much! Especially as it sounds similar to other names, like Genevieve, Evelina, Eva, Neve etc!
Caroline and Geneva are so sweet (and also Frankenstein-esque )
Yeah, Evie is more popular where I am too - but I have met plenty who have longer names
Caroline and Jillian are cute and sassy together! I don’t think it’s a huge deal about one having a nickname and the other not - some people don’t suit nicknames after all, and Caroline rolls easily enough off the tongue it doesn’t need one.
For what it’s worth, I’ve known a number of sets of sibs where only one used a nickname (Abigail ‘Abbie’ and Imogen (never Immy) - Matilda and Alexandra ‘Lexi’ - Amelia, Alexandra ‘Alex’ and Eleanor ‘Ella’)
I completely agree with your point that [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] doesn’t need a nickname. It really does roll off the tongue!
[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear that [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] seems usable. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the nicknames [name_f]Gen[/name_f] and [name_f]Neve[/name_f] / [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] (which I don’t like) would be avoidable if it was made clear that she was [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] or [name_f]Evie[/name_f]?
Also great to know that certain sibsets can have one with a nickname and one without and it’s generally not a big deal. I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] or [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Jill[/name_f] would work beautifully.
Also, I love the combination of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]!
I feel like ‘Neva’ might be the obvious shortening. Gen feels a bit dated now so I don’t think people would go for it, and Neva is the more distinctive syllable. However, if she said her nn was Evie, I think people would use that as Evie is so much more familiar
I thought they were brilliantly matched!! I also met an Imogen and Juliet which I thought was cute!
I think it’s beautiful! I would totally go for it and yes you can definitely get [name_f]Evie[/name_f] from it! I named my daughter [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] and we call her [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and I was so nervous people would hate it but I have had nothing but positive reactions to it, everyone who hears it loves it!
That’s great to know!
Also, what’s your favourite way to get to Evie?
I love Evangeline but it feels horribly mismatched with my boys names.
Evelyn is cute but rhymes with my favourite boys name.
Genevieve doesn’t feel intuitive enough for me.
Evie by itself is gorgeous but I feel she’d resent not having a fuller name like her siblings (e.g. if I did Caroline, Caroline and Evie feel too different in length - Evie has quite literally half the name of her sister (four vs eight letters).
Also, I LOVE Imogen and Juliet!!!
It’s literally perfect!!
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] “Elsie” is so adorable!!
It’s great that you were able to go with your preferred nickname.
I think like [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] “Evie”, it’s not what you’d automatically think of, but totally works as a nickname!
Yeah, Evelyn is sweet but Kev!n and Evelyn would be tricky to cool out!
Evangeline is lovely too but it is a big name - however! I did know sibs Evangel!ne and N0ah which always felt different in vibe, but still worked (especially with her nn)
I actually think [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u] work, despite differences in length. I can see they’ve got a similar vibe in a way (kind of - not too contrasting).
I do worry that [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] feel ‘off’, paired together. [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] feel really nice though, so maybe a full name isn’t totally necessary?
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] and [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] work, although they aren’t perfect.
Yes!! Those were my exact thoughts on [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u]. I feel the same with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], despite neither of them feeling overly modern by themselves to me personally.
I feel [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] in a set with [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] for example would feel a lot more vintage, whereas [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] in a set with [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], [name_u]Genesis[/name_u] and [name_f]Hope[/name_f] for example would feel a lot more modern and Evangelical.
I also agree on order. I feel if they were far apart in birth order it would be less of a big deal. I’m moreso leaning towards [name_f]Geneva[/name_f] for [name_f]Evie[/name_f], or even just [name_f]Evie[/name_f] at the moment, but [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is very pretty. A shame it’s rising quickly! (And also that [name_f]Evie[/name_f] is so popular right now)
