Is Ginger useable?

For context, we’re in Australia where it is sometimes used in a derogatory way… My daughter and I have strawberry blonde hair so it might be a bit on the nose. But I just love it so much :sob:

I first fell for the name after watching Elle Fanning in the film Ginger and Rosa. I love the nickname Ginny… Unfortunately I don’t think my husband would ever go for it.

I loved [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] [name_m]Rogers[/name_m] as a dancer for quite a period, so I think of her! Plus, my little sister (age 17)’s best friend is [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]. She wears the name beautifully. It’s a wonderful name, and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] is adorable. [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is another of my fave ways to get [name_f]Ginny[/name_f].

I think it’s usable! On the nose a bit like you said, but I think it’s fun. I’m in the Southeast US and I could definitely see it being a given name here. I like the sound of it as well, very sweet! Makes me think of gingerbread mostly, which might be why I’m liking it so much

I love it and think its usable where I am in the US

It’s definitely usable, I know a [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] with the given name of [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. Maybe a [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] could work for [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] as well?

I think it’s useable! I’m in Australia too and I know a little Ginger; I didn’t hear any kids teasing her for her name.

[name_f]Ginger[/name_f] is fun and sparky and I do like it - however, it might be a bit tricky if her hair may have a ginger hue :person_shrugging: Would it be one you could use as a nickname? [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], or [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] came to mind

i love ginger, but i absolutely cannot see it working for a girl with red (or reddish) hair… i can just imagine “hi, i’m ginger” / “yeah i can see”

at least where i am, someone strawberry blonde would definitely be called ginger - it’s very commonly used as like… an affectionate insult?

I used to have a classmate named [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] who as far as I know never had any issues with it (I didn’t know her super well though so I can’t 100% confirm that), though I do seem to remember her disliking the food ginger lol. But I think it would probably be a much bigger issue on someone who actually had red hair, in which case teasing would probably be unavoidable.

Personally I wouldn’t use ginger for some bizarre reason strawberry blondes/red heads are always called ginger as an insult where I am so for me it takes me back to secondary school days (I went to a rough secondary school that is now closed down) where ginger would be bellowed out at anyone who had a slight reddish tint to their hair. Honestly it’s so stupid as that hair colour is beautiful

In theory [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] is adorable so sparkly with a pretty autumnal vibe. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] & [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] would be a cottagecore dream but for me I just can’t get leave the bellows of ginger down my school hallways.

For [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] you could use Ginerva? Ginerva is gorgeous!

I agree with previous posters. [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] definitely isn’t unusable, but I commonly hear [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] used in a derogatory way (particularly with younger people), and a [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] with reddish/strawberry colored hair would def be subject to teasing for it.

I LOVE [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]! One of my fave combos ever is [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: it’s a brave choice, for the reasons stated above, but it’s such a cool name.

I love [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] as well but would use it as a nickname which would give her options in case she is a strawberry blonde and would like to wear a more formal name. Maybe [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], Regina……

I think it depends greatly on where you live. [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] isn’t used in a derogatory way where I live. It’s not even really used to describe hair color though people would understand if someone used it that way.

So I’d say where I live it’s usable. Very 60s retro but usable. A name like Blondie wouldn’t be usable though and I’d say [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] is more usable than [name_f]Barbie[/name_f]. lol

Thanks for all your thoughts! They mostly confirmed my own. Interestingly when I asked my husband he said he liked it, but he likes our frontrunner, [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] more, even if she is one of many. I wish it weren’t so popular but c’est la vie. I’m so stuck on a middle for [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], might have to make another thread about it! But I’m going to try to stop obsessing until we have the sex of this little bean confirmed.

I like [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] and love [name_f]Ginnie[/name_f]. Don’t see anything wrong with them at all.

I don’t live in Australia but if it’s anything like the UK, I wouldn’t use [name_f]Ginger[/name_f], personally. “Ginger” is a very common term used in UK schools to make fun of somebody with red/reddish hair. I just wouldn’t take the risk (though maybe Australia has a more enlightened attitude towards red hair than the UK?).

i wouldn’t say it’s unusable, but maybe as a nickname it would be better. also, it’s an anagram for a racist word so i’d be careful of that.

This is the most random thing Ive heard of lately!
