I’ve always loved the meaning of the word “gracious”, and today I thought of turning it into a name. But is it too weird/hippy/out there? I like that it’s more meaningful and more unique than the filler [name]Grace[/name], but does it sound strange as a middle name for classics such as [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], or [name]Eleanor[/name]? (I’m not brave enough to use it as a first name.) Thanks in advance for your help.
[name]Gracious[/name] is very interesting… I like it a bit more then [name]Grace[/name], but I see it as extrordinarily similar to [name]Precious[/name], which I don’t like. Also, with names like [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], or [name]Eleanor[/name], it sounds like the odd one out.
- [name]Athena[/name]
[name]Gracious[/name] makes as much sense as any other virtue name. If people can name their daughters [name]Hope[/name], [name]Faith[/name], [name]Temperance[/name], [name]Constance[/name] or [name]Charity[/name], then [name]Gracious[/name] works too - not my style, but not bad either!
I would ONLY use it in the middle spot.
Not weird, just awkward, [name]IMO[/name]. Sounds like it’s trying too hard not to be [name]Grace[/name].
I think it’s ok as a mn, if you like it. Have you thought about [name]Graciella[/name]/[name]Graziella[/name]? When we traveled to [name]Florence[/name], we stayed at a villa owned by a lady named [name]Graziella[/name]. She told us it was prnd like Grah-tsee-ella, sort of. [name]Just[/name] throw in an Italian accent. I would prn [name]Graciella[/name] similarly, but without the t sound.
I like the idea behind [name]Gracious[/name], but, honestly, it comes off as pretty pretentious to me. Sorry. I think the simple, classic [name]Grace[/name] works so much better. I like @saraallison’s suggestion of [name]Graciella[/name]/[name]Graziella[/name], and I think [name]Gracia[/name] (or the Polish Gracja–said like grah-SEE-ah from what I know) would be gorgeous, as well. I used Gracja in a story once; I absolutely love it. Although I don’t think I’d use Gracja as a FN, either, haha. Something like [name]Elizabeth[/name] Gracja would be stunning, though!
I prefer [name]Grace[/name], [name]Gracious[/name] sounds like your trying to hard and what if the child isn’t really “gracious” Then again I’m not a fan of virtue names for this reason… but if you did use [name]Gracious[/name], I’d keep it as a middle name
it’s fine I don’t see it any different then [name]Grace[/name] just a bit longer
In a word, yes, [name]Gracious[/name] is too weird as a name. It’s an adjective and would be like naming a baby hopeful or charitable. If you want to spice up [name]Grace[/name], [name]Graciella[/name] or [name]Graciana[/name] would be much better options.
Yes, it’s too weird.
I like virtue names, but [name]Gracious[/name] seems sort of weird to me, and I just don’t like the sound of it. [name]Grace[/name] is probably my least favorite virtue name to begin with, but I much prefer it to [name]Gracious[/name].
I think it’s fine in the middle. Otherwise I’d be too tempted to say “goodness” before I said her name…
I think you should stick to [name]Grace[/name]. It’s already an established name with history behind it.
I really like the sentiment, but I agree with pansy that what makes this one more awkward than most virtue names (which I love) is that it is an adjective instead of a noun. I think that makes it feel unfinished, I guess because there is nothing for it to modify, so it just kind of hangs there.
Thanks everyone for your advice! I agree that [name]Gracious[/name] sounds strange because it’s an adjective and not a noun. I do really love [name]Gracia[/name] and [name]Graciela[/name] (Spanish), so I’d probably use those long before I dared to choose [name]Gracious[/name]. It still holds some appeal for me, but it’s more likely that it will turn up as a character name and not a baby name for me. Thanks again!
I would use [name]Gracious[/name] as a quirky middle name choice. The middle spot is the perfect place to get creative with more unusual words or names.
