Is Haley Dated?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys think [name_u]Haley[/name_u] is dated? With my new love for Modern Family, I’ve been observing their name choices and then I came across [name_u]Haley[/name_u]. I was never a fan of the name, but there’s something about the name…Thoughts? Thanks.

As a [name_u]Haley[/name_u] - I can tell you that yep, my name is very much dated. I’ve never liked it, but yeah, it seems to scream 90’s kid to everyone, because it peaked in the 1990’s/early 2000’s (2000 was the peak - #32). I’d opt for [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] or [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] - [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] is still in the top 100, and [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] is the classic original spelling. No one ever seems to get mine right - but [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]/[name_f]Hailey[/name_f] are usually the go to spellings for people who are attempting to guess.

[name_u]Haley[/name_u] has now slipped down past [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] in the US, and I believe it’s at 185 now. [name_u]Haley[/name_u]'s also the only unisex spelling - and when kids at my school found out about [name_u]Haley[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]Osment[/name_m] (I swear that guy caused me so many problems due to a shared name!), I was teased for having a boy’s name, and I’ve disliked it since.

Plus that, I’ve seen quite a few sites associate [name_u]Haley[/name_u] with being a piece of trailer trash/stripper/[name_u]Maury[/name_u] or [name_u]Jerry[/name_u] [name_m]Springer[/name_m] type name (My little sister’s name got the same treatment), so I think you’d be best with a different spelling.

I think so, yes.

It does have a pretty sound, though.

Personally, lately I’ve been liking [name_f]Mahala[/name_f] (pronounced ma-hay-la) with [name_u]Haley[/name_u] as a nickname.

@[name_u]Haley[/name_u]: The only other spelling of [name_u]Haley[/name_u] that I like is [name_f]Haylee[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that would work also?

@nono: [name_f]Mahala[/name_f] is cute! :slight_smile:

I think [name_f]Haylee[/name_f] might work a bit better - the lee spellings are going upwards in popularity while [name_u]Haley[/name_u] is going down  [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] would be my top choice though.

@[name_u]Haley[/name_u]: [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] is adorable, I just can’t seem to find a middle name that complements it

I personally really like [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ([name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] was the name of [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Hemingway[/name_m]'s wife), but I’m sure I could come up with a list of middle names that fit it to help you if you’d like  ([name_u]Hadley[/name_u]'s a GP of mine)

@[name_u]Haley[/name_u]: I’d love that!

[name_u]Haley[/name_u] is dated. It’s very late 90’s, I think. I think a similar but infinitely better choice would be [name_u]Hadley[/name_u].

I think that it is dated no matter which spelling you choose. And it definitely gives off a “trailer park” vibe, if for no other reason than Eminem’s daughter and his background. I have met many perfectly normal Haleys (or whatever spelling) and it is a perfectly acceptable name.

Lawsonhaley, I find it funny that kids teased you for [name_u]Haley[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]Osment[/name_m] having the same name because he clearly has a girl name!

Yep, [name_u]Haley[/name_u] is dated. If you use it, do so knowing that. If you want fresh, keep looking.

I know two Haleys. One is almost 30, and the other is 11.
To me it sounds dated though.

It’s dated to me. I know about 12 [name_u]Haley[/name_u]'s from school (a lot spelled differently), and I think of the girl star from the 50s/60s, [name_u]Haley[/name_u] [name_m]Mills[/name_m].

[name_u]Hadley[/name_u] is a much better alternative. [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_u]Tate[/name_u], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_u]Reese[/name_u], and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] are cute combos

Yeah, I was about 8 or 9, and there were some nasty kids in my class - I was the only [name_u]Haley[/name_u] any of them knew at the time.

I’ll get on it  [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want to PM me your email so I can email you the list?

I really like [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] (this spelling only). I don’t view it as confined to one time period at all, not that I actually view ‘dated’ as a bad thing.

[name_u]Haley[/name_u]'s [name_f]Comet[/name_f] swung near the earth in 1986, which I would guess had something to do with the spike of the name around then, and the sense that it’s date-stamped around then. I haven’t looked at the historical popularity data though.

yes, it is a bit dated, but a cute name…
if you like [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]! maybe you’ll like:
[name_u]Hayden[/name_u]

[name_u]Harper[/name_u]

I love the name [name_u]Haley[/name_u] but I personally prefer it spelt [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]
