Is Hallie a nickname for Harriet?

Someone suggested [name]Hallie[/name] (which I love) as a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name] and a Google search shows lots of real people named [name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hallie[/name], but Nameberry never mentions [name]Hallie[/name] as a nn or even as a related name. Is [name]Hallie[/name] actually a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name] and Nameberry let me down for the first time? Or are all those people just crazy?

Are you sure those L’s aren’t T’s? I haven’t heard of [name]Hallie[/name] as a nn for [name]Harriet[/name], only [name]Hattie[/name].

Um, no. I don’t see how that could be the nickname. Why don’t you just go with [name]Hayley[/name]?

I think [name]Hattie[/name] is the nickname for [name]Harriet[/name]. If you love [name]Hallie[/name] why not name her that? My friend named her daughter [name]Halle[/name].

I wouldn’t think of [name]Hallie[/name] as a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name]. It doesn’t make sense to me. While there’s some leeway with nicknames, it doesn’t make any sense. [name]Do[/name] you need a nickname for [name]Harriet[/name]? I think it’s fine on its own.

I’m going to be the odd one out in this opinion is looks like, but I don’t see why Hallie couldn’t be used as a nickname for Harriet. Normal it’s Hattie, but Hallie is pretty similar. Plus, if Jack is a nickname for John, Molly a nickname for Mary, and Harry a nickname for Henry, clearly it doesn’t matter if a nickname contains only letters found in the original name. I say go for it if you love it!

Edit: Also, I just remembered Hal is the nickname for Harold! That’s probably where Hallie for Harriet is coming from.

[name]Hallie[/name] is the traditional nickname for [name]Harriet[/name] in the same way that [name]Hal[/name] is the traditional nickname for [name]Henry[/name] (see: [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s plays).

Many English nicknames were formed by turning “r” in to “l” — [name]Mary[/name]/[name]Molly[/name], [name]Sarah[/name]/[name]Sally[/name], [name]Dorothy[/name]/[name]Dolly[/name].

Agree 100%!

I don’t see why it couldn’t be. People just get SO hung-up on nicknames. If you want to call your [name]Harriet[/name] “[name]Hallie[/name]”, then go right ahead. Why should anyone else care? It’s not like nicknames always make sense.
