Is Harper still useable for a boy?

What do you think? Has it crossed over to being only a girl name?

It makes me think of [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name] so I would say that yes its crossed over to the girls side, but then I dont think [name]Ive[/name] ever known a male [name]Harper[/name] to begin with.

I think it’s still usable-- I know a little boy named [name]Harper[/name] (mother’s maiden name was [name]Harp[/name]). In a few more years though it may go the way of [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Hillary[/name], etc.

I hope so! It still ranks at number 690, so quite a few boys are still being given the name. I think it’s adorable for a boy. I saw it used on a TV show once and the little boy was just the cutest… until then, I hadn’t really been able to see [name]Harper[/name] on a boy but now I totally can! I would be so impressed to meet a little boy named [name]Harper[/name].

I don’t think it’s any worse than [name]Bailey[/name] (ranked 995) which I am seriously considering for a boy, so I don’t know why not. If you use it I would use a really masculine MN, though. I had considered [name]Harper[/name] [name]Edward[/name] or [name]Harper[/name] [name]Isaiah[/name] when I had thought about adding it to my list. I think [name]Noah[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] are adorable together!

I was thinking of it for the middle spot, [name]Julian[/name] [name]Harper[/name]. (I know I’m still stuck on what to pair with [name]Julian[/name]).

I guess I never really thought of it as a boys name until recently either, but know that I do, I like it.

I think [name]Harper[/name] is very masculine. I really cannot fathom it for a girl so I say yes. I can see a male [name]Harper[/name] as a good sibset with [name]Noah[/name]. I would just use a very masculine MN to balance it out

Yeah I think so, I’ve always thought this name was very masculine. I actually knew a male [name]Harper[/name] who was in his early twenties, he happened to be very handsome so it put the name in a good light for me and made it easy for me to picture on a boy. I personally like it a lot but it’s not on my personal list atm because it’s so trendy for girls right now. I wish more people would start using it on boys though so I can!

I think it’s useable. I think it sounds very masculine.

Yes! In fact, [name]Harper[/name] is much better on a boy. I know a little four-month-old boy named [name]Harper[/name], and it fits him well.

To be fully fair, I think you are getting a very different response on this website than you would elsewhere. I could be wrong, but I suspect plenty of people outside of the world of name-nerd are going to see this entirely as a girls’ name. I am not exactly one of those, I think it could work, but I honestly do think at this point it might be more trouble for the kid than it is truly worth.

There is a guy named [name]Chelsea[/name] who posts on here sometimes, and he usually advises against situations like this, he has written some blog posts on here and also has a link to his personal blog on his own website.

All this said since it’s your thought for the middle I’m less concerned. Although since [name]Julian[/name] is not the toughest name (very masculine, and I love it, but still, close in sound to [name]Julia[/name] and [name]Jillian[/name] and [name]Julianne[/name]), he might well do well to have a more classically masculine name in the middle.

All best!

I think you’re right. Why is it that girls can get away with more masculine names than boys with softer names. I really like [name]Julian[/name] [name]Harper[/name], but it might not be the best choice for him. I have never met anyone with the name [name]Harper[/name], so I can’t really comment on whether it seems more feminine or masculine to me, but I am leaning more towards the boys… I (like everyone else I guess) like it because of [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name].

I’m not a fan of the name [name]Harper[/name] for either gender but the sound of it makes me think that it’s more suitable for a boy. Since [name]Julian[/name] is a more “softer” masculine name, I think the stronger [name]Harper[/name] would do fine in the middle spot. Since [name]Harper[/name] is in the middle, I don’t think it will be too big of an issue.

[name]Harper[/name] is definitely usable on a boy! I don’t know where you live, but here in the UK, most people that I knew reacted with “that’s a boys name!” when [name]Victoria[/name] [name]Beckham[/name] named her daughter [name]Harper[/name]. I see it as a masculine name, and I have it on my boys list. Definitely usable!

There are definitely differences between how the UK and US assign gender to certain names. From what I can see, [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Brooklyn[/name], [name]Bailey[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Robin[/name] are all much more common on boys than girls in the UK whereas the opposite is true in the US.

I think that a lot of people would assume that a [name]Harper[/name] was a girl, but seeing as how it is still ranked for a boy I would say that it is usable! [name]Harper[/name] seems to be a quick flash in the pan for girls but I would predict it to drop off eventually as well. [name]Harper[/name] has much more history as a boys name. I don’t think I have ever met a [name]Harper[/name] so I really don’t know which gender I think it would be better on.

My association when I hear [name]Harper[/name] is a Greeck God and a femenine young girl. I’m sure it would work for a boy.

Yes, [name]Harper[/name] is a lovely boys name!

Only in the middle with a very masculine fn, like [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Harper[/name] or [name]William[/name] [name]Harper[/name]. I think most people’s first thoughts will be of [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name] and [name]Harper[/name] [name]Beckham[/name].

I think it sounds girly

In the US, [name]Harper[/name] is definitely more of a girl’s name at the moment, but I don’t think it will always be. I really like [name]Harper[/name] on a boy, but it would be best in the middle or with a really masculine first name.
