So I already have 2 boys, their names are [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] [name_m]Roland[/name_m] and [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] [name_u]Evan[/name_u]. I don’t know what baby #3 will be since we are keeping it a secret but if it’s a girl I am considering the name [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. However, the feedback that I have gotten from people is that [name_u]Harper[/name_u] is too masculine for a little girl. My two runner up girl names are: [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Genvieve[/name_f].
What do you think, is [name_u]Harper[/name_u] a good name for a girl…one that can grow nicely as she grows or should I go for something more fem such as [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]?
I adore [name_u]Harper[/name_u] for a girl! If our last name didn’t end in an “er” [name_u]Harper[/name_u] would have been our first choice for a girl.
I find the name very harsh and unattractive - for either gender. While I can appreciate the literary connection with [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u], I don’t like the similarity with the derogatory term “harpie” (a shrewish, nagging woman). It is also a term used in Greek mythology for loathsome creatures who were half-woman and half-bird.
I really like the combo [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. The only thing that would make me hesitate is that it has the same ending as [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]. With [name_u]Jayden[/name_u], [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u], you have three fairly unisex names, which is fine. But if you’d like her name to stand out a bit from the boys without going into complete frilly territory, have you considered [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Rose[/name_f]’ [name_u]Harper[/name_u]? I also really like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], but I don’t think they would work as well with [name_u]Harper[/name_u] as a middle name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought. Good luck,
It’s a popular girls’ name now, so, no one is going to be shocked by it or think that it’s too unfeminine.
I don’t think it’s unfeminine, I think it’s unattractive, as [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] said. To “harp on” someone means “to nag,” so a “[name_u]Harper[/name_u]” (even though that’s not really a term used) sounds to me like you’re trying to describe someone who’s a nagging beyotch. I get that you could say that a [name_u]Harper[/name_u] is one who plays the harp, but that’s just not where my mind goes.
The name is also just very trendy and will be incredibly dated in 10-20 years. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is sweet and timeless, and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is lovely, although I wouldn’t go with a “v”-heavy middle name of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a great middle for either name.
Since it’s in the top 25 for girls now, I can’t imagine you’ll find many people who will tell you it’s too masculine. I don’t think it has an attractive sound for either sex. A lot of parents claim to be honoring [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u], but it seems like if they were actually honoring her they would know that she doesn’t even go by [name_u]Harper[/name_u]…
I love [name_u]Harper[/name_u] for a girl.
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] conjures images of the amazing [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] with her classic novel ‘[name_m]How[/name_m] to kill a Mockingbird?’ which makes her feel feminine. Furthermore celebrities such as the [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] family have used [name_u]Harper[/name_u] for their daughter. I think [name_u]Harper[/name_u] has become a lot more feminine then masculine and she works with your son’s names.
If you’re concerned about masculinity, then why give her a unisex name?
[name_u]Jayden[/name_u], [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] & [name_u]Harper[/name_u] could easily be 3 boys or 3 girls or a mixture. If you want people to be able to tell which one is the girl, I would not name her [name_u]Harper[/name_u]. Go with [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
Thanks everyone, all the feedback was much appreciated. I have narrowed it down to two options [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] with the middle name being [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. So now we will just wait and see which name should fit if it does end up being a girl ::fingers crossed::
I really like [name_u]Harper[/name_u] for a girl or for a boy; its unisex to me and its darling either way. Though I think [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] are too similar. I noticed both your boy’s have y’s in their name, and they’re both sort of rough and tumble names. I really think [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] goes great with [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Skyler[/name_u], but I think [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] are far cries from [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Roland[/name_m]. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Harper[/name_u] really speaks to me, but if you’re not into that, I’d go with [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].
I think [name_u]Harper[/name_u] is fine with [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Skyler[/name_u], and I think it is feminine. It’s not my style, but this is about you. I think it goes better with your boys’ names than [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] which are a bit jarring with the definitely contemporary brothers.
I’ve always thought of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] as a girl name, it’s too soft and pretty for a boy. And [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is darling!
I cld be shot for saying this on NB, but I am a big fan of 2 mn. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a-go for me lol
There are [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Seven[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Definitely not masculine! I’d love to see a little girl named [name_u]Harper[/name_u].
