Is Harvey off the table?

I’ve always loved the name Harvey, and it seemed uncommon enough to where I have never met someone in person with that name. I deemed it unusable because of its association with the awful hollywood figure, but I heard it was used for a character in the Sabrina Netflix show, and it made me wonder what the general consensus was. What are your thoughts on the name as a whole, and do you think it is useable?

I would not use it since I have a very sleazy feeling about this name but I have seen others consider it who aren’t bothered. Id rather use [name_f]Karen[/name_f] :joy:

The [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] character was named that long before the netflix redo and way before the bad association started.

I know a teenage [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] that makes the name feel much more wearable — I personally wouldn’t use it, but that doesn’t mean no one should!

oh I see, thank you for mentioning it♥️

haha well that’s good to know, thank you for your comment <3

I’ve always loved this name and it’s so sad that it had to be worn by such a sleazy piece of human trash. However, now that we’re 4 years past the scandal unfolding, I don’t think it’s completely ruined. At least not in my opinion. Others may disagree. What matters most is what YOU think. If you can separate this name from Weinstein, I think it’s completely fine to use. But definitely be aware that some will make the unfortunate connection. If that bothers you, maybe don’t use it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] SO likes the name [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] so we considered using [name_u]Harvest[/name_u] as a full name with [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] as a nickname. I think [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] on its own is still cute though, and I personally don’t think it’s completely ruined since it’s not a completely uncommon name so Weinstein isn’t the only one to wear it.

I’m glad you think it’s not totally unwearable, that’s what I was trying to see. Thank you for your input, glad to hear someone else loves the name too.

Thank you for your in depth thoughts, it really helps. Your reply definitely makes sense. You raise a good point about the top 100, and that people aren’t likely to verbally comment on it. Congratulations to your cousin!

I quite like [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. I’m not in the US, and while I definitely know what’s going on with the Hollywood figure, it wasn’t as huge of a story here as it was in the US, so maybe that makes a difference. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] doesn’t feel like a one-person-name to me (like for example Beyoncé) so I think it’s still usable.

The stats show that [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is bouncing back! It saw a big dip in births after the scandal (and the hurricane) but is now roughly back to where it was before, which I think shows that the name is going to transcend its most infamous associations.

Personally, I think it’s usable now and will become more and more so as time passes. It has the benefit of being popular and fashionable enough when the scandal hit that I think it avoids “one person name” territory.

[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] Milk is another (good) [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] association, for example.

Hmmm not sure actually, I always liked this name too but not sure I could go there post #metoo

As others have mentioned, [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] doesn’t carry such strong associations outside of the US and for me they are ameliorated further still by knowing a 5 year old [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] who is cuteness itself.

This exactly. To me, personally, the connection is nigh-unshakable and I therefore consider the name unusable for me. That said, if I heard of someone else using the name Harvey, it would never cross my mind that their use of the name has any connection to that man, and I certainly wouldn’t judge it. It’s still a usable name with other associations— even much more positively noteworthy folks like Harvey Milk.

I taught a little [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] a few years back, so generally I can separate it from the Weinstein association. I don’t think it’s unusable

I find it unusable now but it was incredibly popular here before the scandal came out, so in many ways I would expect it to crop up in tv etc to reflect popular names on characters a certain age.

where i live, harvey is really common, so doesn’t bring to mind the awful figure really at all, so I’m not sure how connected it would be somewhere where there aren’t so many harveys around. however, the fact that it’s managed to get really popular in the uk regardless seems to be a good sign, so I wouldn’t say it’s off the table.
