Is Hazel on the up and up?

We have always loved the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] but I feel like it’s getting pretty popular. So the question is-is it actually popular or is it just that I’m seeing it a lot on mameberry?

I think that all depends on where you live, but…

According to the SSA, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] went up 830 places in popularity from 2000 to 2015 (from 893 to 63). So I guess you could say it’s gotten pretty popular the last couple of years. It all varies per state, tho (In [name_u]California[/name_u] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] ranked 64th in 2015, but wasn’t a top 100 name in [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] at all).

This makes sense if you think about the fact that several celebrities used it for their daughters and the several pop culture influences (like The Fault in Our Stars).

In [name_f]England[/name_f] it was a little less popular in 2015, sitting on the 219th spot.

I totally agree with @millia.

I don’t personally know any Hazels and I don’t think it’s terribly popular in my state, but it definitely has become a popular name overall. I don’t think the overall (nationwide) popularity of a name matters as much as the popularity of it in your community, though. It’s pretty hard to go your whole life without meeting at least one other person with your name, especially if you ever travel outside of your home city. haha So I wouldn’t worry about the overall popularity and just look at the popularity where you are to determine if you think it’s too popular.

According to SSA, yes, but that’s a reflection of all 50 states. Some states don’t have [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] in their top names. I think you should check local birth announcements in your area and see if there have been any born in the past couple of years.

I agree with other posters, definitely check regional data, as it’ll be your most accurate indicator.
