I’ve seen a bunch of references lately to [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] as a “hipster” name, and it’s kind of bumming me out. It’s not that I mind a slight hipster association too terribly - both of my other kids’ names appear on hipster lists sometimes, too - but is [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] set to become THE hipster name? It’s already more popular than I’d normally go for, but I love it too much to take it off my list.
[name_m]Will[/name_m] I regret naming my kid this in 5 years? (We live in a city, where hipsters are plentiful. Some people would probably even categorize US as hipsters.)
If you can, tell me what this name is comparable to for you - is it the [name_u]Finn[/name_u] of girls’ names? I guess I see [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] as just as much of a hipster name as [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]…but the internets seem to think otherwise.
Wow, I [name_m]JUST[/name_m] posted a thread where I mentioned we are considering [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] for a middle name.
I don’t think it is too “hipster”. Maybe it is getting a little more popular but I highly doubt it will be THAT popular. Have you heard of a lot of people in your local area thinking of the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]? If its just online, I wouldn’t worry. I think the odds of your daughter being in a Kindergarten class with another [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] are very low.
Sidenote: I really love the name [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. We really wanted to use it but I have a cousin named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and it was just too similar for us.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] realized I didn’t answer your question. No - I don’t know any Hazels in real life and haven’t even met any at the park or out and about (which is surprising, considering it’s only 175 on the SS list). We’ve lived in 3 of the largest US cities in the past 3 years, and I haven’t heard it anywhere. Finns, on the other hand, we meet EVERYWHERE
We love [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], too. I do already know one [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] which is giving me slight pause in using it, but we may do it anyway.
Is [name_u]Finn[/name_u] a hipster name? I don’t know any hipsters with a baby [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. Maybe [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] would be hipstery?
I do think that [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] has a hipster vibe, but I think it’s becoming more mainstream & it will lose that image. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] & [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] used to be hipster names, but now they’re palatable to middle [name_u]America[/name_u] & they don’t feel hipstery anymore.
People would probably categorize me as a hipster. I consider a hipster name to be something surprising and a little dusty or crusty or off-kilter. Once a name has some exposure the dust & crust are gone and the name straightens out. I think that’s why people always say that hipsters just try to pick the most outlandish thing that they can, it’s the drive of people in my generation to find the next new thing cause we grew up with the internet or something like that.
I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is fine and it has enough mass appeal to be worn by a girl without hipster parents & outside of a city.
I don’t really have enough of a grasp to realize (or care!) about labels like hipster and such. I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]'s a lovely name. I love it. If I love it, I’d add it to my list. If I had to come up with a male equivalent, I would probably say something like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] or [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Those aren’t very hipster, are they?
tararyaz, I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] was the hipster name several years back. We certainly meet a ton of little Finns out in the world. I guess it’s the popularity factor that bothers me more than the “hipster” factor - we just happen to live in big cities and associate with that population so if it fits that bill, it likely will be popular in our area.
ashthedreamer, you are totally right - I shouldn’t (and don’t, when I really think about it) care about the name’s label. What I [name_f]DO[/name_f] care about is it’s popularity within our social circle and school situation. (And maybe I shouldn’t even care about that, but growing up with one of the most popular names of my birth year made me want something more unusual for my children.)
I also live in one of the largest U.S. cities (in the ‘hipster’ neighborhood) and I’m a nanny so I hear them all! [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is also on our list and I’m always worried about popularity. I haven’t heard any little ladies with that name so far, though. I’ve heard plenty called [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Lux[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], etc. And of course plenty of Emmas and Sophies!
I think you’ll be okay! At least, I hope you are because that means I’m okay, too!
It’s funny to think that “hipster” names are probably different in each hipster area. I am talking [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] hipster over here, but I’m sure a [name_m]Portland[/name_m] hipster or an Ashville hipster name might be a different varietal. I think when it comes to [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] it could skew in that direction, but it could also be worn by a kid whose parents are not the type.
Well I live in the pacific NW in a sort of hipster area and don’t know any Hazels. I like the name and don’t think it will ever become over used (which is great in my opinion). I think you’re fine. It’s not going to be comparable to all the [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]'s of my generation.
I find [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] a very classic name rather than hipster. It sounds almost Elizabethan or Edwardian to me…and then there’s that luscious food association with it (i.e. Hazelnut). I’m also reminded of forests, a cozy hearth, [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] & the [name_f]Provence[/name_f] region in [name_f]France[/name_f]. I think it’s a charming, timeless & elegant name!!!
To me, the equivalent of [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] would be:
I don’t know if it’s hipster, but it does seem quite popular on this website. I automatically picture an old woman when I hear the name. I guess all old names come round again.
