Is Indigo too hippie?

I was talking to my friend today about names since she is due with her first baby, and somehow we got on the subject of what I would name another daughter. When I told her “Right now, probably [name]Indigo[/name]” she said “[name]Indigo[/name]? Isn’t that a little too…hippie?” Which is funny, because both of our families and histories are very alternative/bohemian to say the least. So, hearing her say “too hippie” kinda scared me… Is [name]Indigo[/name] too hippie to use? What do you see when you think of a little [name]Indigo[/name]?

It is quite hippie, but definitely not TOO hippie. I however adore hippie names, so I might not have the same opinion as the average person.

HOWEVER, though it’s not your question, I do think [name]Indigo[/name] is much better on a little boy. On a boy it seems intelligent and creative. On a girl it seems dreamy, sporty, and maybe a little tomboy-like. I hope that makes sense, haha.

Good luck!

I also love [name]Indigo[/name], but I have the same question. People in my life seem to think it’s very out-there, but it’s on my list! I love the nn [name]Indy[/name].

Nooo, not too hippie in my opinion. It goes well with [name]Rowan[/name], since they’re both botanical but not conventional.
I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I personally wouldnt use [name]Indigo[/name] because of the history of [name]Indigo[/name] plantations and manufacturing.

I don’t think it’s too hippie at all! It pus me in the same mind as [name]Willow[/name]. [name]Lovely[/name] and earthy names. I would use it in a heart beat if it went better with my other favorites. [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] sound perfect together

I wouldn’t say it was too hippie, It definitely has a bohemian vibe but that’s what I love about it.

I would call it a hippie name, yes, but I don’t see how that’s a bad thing. Not my style but there’s nothing wrong with it and the nn [name]Indie[/name] is great.

I like all the “ind-y” names. [name]Indigo[/name], [name]Indio[/name], [name]India[/name]. The only thing that matters is whether it is “too” hippie for you, not for anyone else! But I think [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and (for example) [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Joss[/name] or [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Elise[/name] would be great.

I knew a darling little [name]Indigo[/name], but he was a boy, so I automatically associate the name with him now.

Nooooooooooo! It is perfecto.

I say yes. [name]India[/name] or [name]Indiana[/name] are preferable for a girl.

Not at all. I have to admit I think [name]Merryn[/name] and Eirlys are both more interesting than [name]Indigo[/name] and a better match with [name]Rowan[/name], but it’s certainly usable-- esp given your family background. “Too hippie” would be something like Peaceday or Maharani [name]Maryjane[/name].

I don’t know why but [name]Indigo[/name] strikes me more as a boy name than a girl name. That being said, I probably wouldn’t personally use it, but it’s not bad and you can always use the nickname “[name]Indie[/name]”. If [name]Beyonce[/name] can name her daughter [name]Blue[/name], I don’t see why you couldn’t name yours [name]Indigo[/name].

I see what you mean, but I’ve had comments about [name]Merryn[/name] sounding too much like [name]Rowan[/name] and my husband turned his nose up when I mentioned Eirlys. I’m trying to avoid the -n ending next time if I can help it. I feel like it’s getting overly trendy and I’m already a little irritated that [name]Rowan[/name] is getting so popular all of a sudden (since I’ve liked it since I was 13 or so, it’s always felt like my name)

I don’t think so. I find it to be fresh, easy, fun, bohemian.

[name]Love[/name] the name. It’s on my short list but I think husband may veto it:)

It sounds African American to me. Maybe it’s due to [name]Beyonce[/name]?

Yes, my name is also a weird color name and its been a burden my entire life. Honestly.

It’s funny because my association with [name]Indigo[/name] is to denim & blue jeans. It feels strong & durable & makes me think of 1880s mail order catalogs somehow

It doesn’t have a really hippie naturey quality to me.

I always picture fabric too. I guess I’m worried about the “[name]Indigo[/name] children” reference, that theory has always kind of bugged me and I don’t want people to think I named my child [name]Indigo[/name] because I think she is gifted or anything.
