Like, at two distinct separate times? Not like two eggs at once for twins.
I just [name_m]DON[/name_m]'T understand what’s happening with my body. I just came off contraceptive pills (this is my first ‘month’ TTC - not that it’s a month when I’m on CD 40), ovulated at I think CD 21, and now I’ve done another saliva ovulation test today (CD 40) that looks like I’m starting a fertile window again. No sign of a period or PMS, and I had a negative pregnancy test yesterday at CD 39. Is this even a thing? I’m so overwhelmed with the confusion about my own body and I hate it.
I’ve never heard of someone ovulating two separate times in one month. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible though. I’m guessing though that you’re body is just recuperating after the hormones of your bc. It isn’t unusual for your body to do strange things if you’ve just come off of bc after being on it for awhile.
As far as I’m aware, the ovulation itself triggers the luteal phase i.e.; starts the break down of lining etc. so can only occur once per cycle. I would guess your hormones are out of whack just coming off the pill giving you false ovulation readings, and would probably wait until after your first ‘natural’ period before you start tracking.
Okay just done a bit of research, and saliva ovulation testers work by measuring an oestrogen surge which happens around the time of ovulation. Coming off the pill is likely to have caused this surge especially if you were on a combination pill. Did you just do the one test at CD21?
Like I said, I would give your body have a chance to settle back into it’s normal rhythm. It’s not what you wanna hear if you’re TTC but it could take 3+ of months from my experience.
I hate the pill for this exact reason too - being like ''I have absolutely no idea what my hormones are doing right now; this is not the way nature works" is really distressing for me as well ugh. I was on and off the pill for a couple of years, and whilst I appreciate it’s hand in social change, never again will I touch those evil pink pills.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] you manage to resolve things! If not there’s no harm in mentioning it to a gp or nurse.
I’m not really sure how the saliva tests work… is that how you know that you’ve already ovulated? Are you temping or anything? As far as I know, temping is the only way to actually confirm ovulation (other than like blood tests I guess) because it’s an after-the-fact indicator. If the saliva tests are picking up the surge in hormones before ovulation like OPKs do, it’s a good indicator that you’re about to ovulate, but you don’t always actually ovulate after that, if that makes sense. If you’re CD 39 and having negative pregnancy tests, I would assume you didn’t actually ovulate on CD 21, because you would’ve started your period by now or would be testing positive (most likely. there are weird instances of people who don’t test positive for a long time, but it isn’t very common!!).
When I came off birth control I had several weeks of ‘fertile’ signs but didn’t end up actually ovulating until like CD 35 or something. I wasn’t using OPKs or saliva tests, but I was charting my temp and cervical fluid, and I think I would’ve gotten several positives if I had tried OPKs. I think it is possible to ovulate more than once (once from each side, which is how you end up with fraternal twins), but they’re usually within a day or two so I doubt that’s what is happening. The first few cycles off birth control can be so frustrating, hope things get normal soon! If it makes you feel any better, I had my IUD out in [name_f]September[/name_f], didn’t ovulate until the end of [name_f]October[/name_f], had my period, didn’t ovulate on that cycle until mid [name_u]December[/name_u] (CD 37 I think), but got pregnant that cycle!
You can ovulate twice, BUT only if you have PCOS or another follicle producing disease. With PCOS you have multiple cysts instead of one. These cysts pop at random times, which means you can ovulate once, twice, or maybe not at all during a cycle. With PCOS you don’t have regular cycles, your period is random/irregular, which makes pregnancy a lot harder. A normal person has only one cyst on their ovary, which pops once per cycle (ovulation).
I never used or heard of a saliva test. I would invest in some OPKs because that’s what my doctor recommended for me due to my PCOS.
My understanding of your post is that this is your first cycle off of oral contraceptives…? If that is the case, along with two tests telling you you are “ovulating” then I don’t think you are ovulating at all. Your body is probably going through the hormonal motions of a cycle but your body hasn’t caught up with the hormone fluctuations yet. It took me three months to start ovulating again once coming off the pill. The first month was totally wacky and each month got a little better. It took us nine months to get pregnant after coming off the pill. If this is your first cycle off the pill I think you need to relax and give your body a chance to regulate. 3-4 months from now when there is the chance that things have normalized, then I would start analyzing your cycle. Right now there is just too much going on hormonally to try to detect normal cycle stages. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my thoughts, good luck!
Thanks everyone. Not great feedback but you’re all probably right
I took another ovulation test today and it was negative, so I think the one a few days ago was something else weird. The CD21 I think was right - I did take multiple tests several days in a row and it showed a rise over a few days and then quick drop off which is expected. I guess I’m back to just waiting for a period
