Is It Really Popular?

Hey Berries! If you’ve seen either of our other postings, you’ll know how we’re both REALLY picky and how it’s EXTREMELY hard for us to find anything :frowning: We have both agreed on [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but I’m really concerned about the popularity of it. I really want to avoid a popular name, but it’s literally the ONLY name that fits exactly what we have asked for.

So my question is, is [name_f]Violet[/name_f] really that popular?

If you’re in the States it is within the top 100 but I don’t think it is that popular. Something that makes me feel better about names that are more popular is the fact that even though there is a ranking, not as many parents are choosing popular names. People are choosing more unique names over all so the odds of being 1 of 4 Sophias in a classroom isn’t really that high, unlike with [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] or [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] 20 or so years ago. Plus, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is barely in the top 100 anyway. I think if you love it you should go for it!

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] entered the top 1,000 names in the US in 1998 at No# 904 and has since jumped to No# 89 (that’s 3,252 girls compared to the No# 1 name of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] which was given to 22,158 babies - quite a difference.). The increase is most probably influenced by actors [name_m]Ben[/name_m] Affleck and [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] [name_m]Garner[/name_m] choosing the name for their first daughter in 2005. Also, it’s a nature name and nature names are hot! You have to remember that these are national stats so it may not reflect the popularity in your area. Have you noticed many Violets in your neck of the woods? To be sure, check the Social Security website for your state and see the “real” stats where you live. Personally, I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is MORE popular here on Nameberry than in real life so I don’t think you should worry too much. If you love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (and I do too), go for it!

Thanks for the bit about checking the SSA website! I just did, and according to it [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was number 93 in our state. I’ve noticed a fair amount of “[name_f]Violet[/name_f]'s” in our area which is why I was really worried. I’m also a teacher, so I probably notice more when there are multiples of a name

When I was reading a previous thread of yours, my first thought was [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but someone else mentioned it and you said it was too popular for you. I don’t know what area you are in, but I don’t think I have met one [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and I work about an hour from where I live, and I have lived in different parts of my state. I also teach and tutor, but with a smaller population. I think its a great name, and if both of you agree it fits everything you want, go for it.

I love the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and while I do think it is gaining some popularity, the name does not seem to be too trendy/ popular to use, in my opinion. If you love the name, use it.

It is a beautiful name! But it is very trendy & popular where I live. Perhaps quite a few of those 3,252 girls that @mischa mentioned were born in my area…

If it’s the only name that fits what you’re looking for, try to overlook the popularity. Sometimes, it’s more important to have a name that you love than to look for something else just because a name is popular.
