I really like history (especially ancient) and would love to give my children middle names with meaning: [name]Alexander[/name], [name]Darius[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name], [name]Augustus[/name], etc. [name]Hannibal[/name] is one of my favorite ancient military men, but is that name too stigmatized, even for a middle name? I know most people would automatically go for the fictional serial killer association and not the brilliant Carthaginian (I would even take the A-Team reference!). I’m not pregnant or expecting any time soon, I’m just curious about opinions!
I work with a woman who wants to name her son [name]Hannibal[/name]. I go to history before I go to serial killer, if it makes you feel better. I think [name]Hannibal[/name] could work fine in the middle. It has history and he could explain that whenever anyone finds out what his middle name is.
Ps: You have the Acheron symbol for an avatar. <3 I actually really like the name Acheron and Apostolos is cool too (and a Titanic name).
I don’t like it at all, but if it’s got great meaning for you, then why not. It’s fine for a middle spot.
I’d just consider how he might feel carrying that name, you may love the association, but maybe it’ll be harder for him to like.
I think of the killer and naming a kid after a military man isn’t really appealing to me either.
By the title of your post, you clearly recognize that the name [name]Hannibal[/name] may not be such a hot idea. I would avoid such a name. [name]Even[/name] if YOU make the historical connection, it doesn’t mean that the general population will. What other people think shouldn’t matter, but if you have to live your entire life with such a stigmatized name, it’s sure to cause troubles/embarrassment. If it’s any consolation, I love all the other names you mentioned.
I recently made a thread on [name]Hannibal[/name] on a whim. Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums
According to the poll it’s a no go! I love it, but wouldn’t use it for a first name for sure. Maybe a middle name still with the right first name. But generally, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t use it.
Thanks for your honesty, guys! I figured these would be the responses I would get. I guess I’ll have to use the other names instead xP.
@dantea–I looovvvee the name Acheron! It’s on my list; we’ll see if future husband goes for it!
I think it’s usable as a middle name with a “safe” first name.
@beka_92 – My husband and I talked about Acheron in our combos, since we are using a Greek name in each combo. It would have been [name]Damien[/name] Acheron, but then we decided that the [name]River[/name] Acheron in the underworld was a little too much of a sad association.
I have two issues with Hannibel. Firstly, I think of the serial killer, and the movie. I think its still too soon to use it because of that association.
Secondly, as my DH pointed out to me, it sounds like [name]Annabelle[/name]. Too much teasing potential for sure. If you really love it, use it in the middle, but I’d avoid it as a first name for sure.
Also, I’m a huge fan of [name]Cyrus[/name], its one of my favourites!
I actually love the name [name]Hannibal[/name]. Not that I would use it as a first name. XD But I think it would be fine for a middle name!
