Is it too similar?

My favorite girls name is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. It’s classic, tailored, timeless, sophisticated, and wears well with just about any last name (which is important when naming little girls). The only problem is that it’s also my name, and I don’t too much care for daughters with the same name as their mothers.

The only name that I’ve been able to come up with that shares these qualities is [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], which I like, and I love the nickname [name_f]Kate[/name_f], and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] for when she said young. But there’s another problem–my sister’s named [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f], and goes by [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f].

Im afraid it’s almost the same problem, do you think it’d be bad for my daughter to share my sister’s nickname? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys have any other suggestions that meet the above criteria? Thanks so much!

– [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]

I think sharing NNs is probably more annoying that sharing full names that are rarely used.
If there are any other nicknames you could think of that you like, it would totally work. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Katja[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_u]Kay[/name_u] or [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]?

Other names that might fit the bill, I think, are:

Josephine
Isabelle
Fleur
Mathilde
Adelheid
Cecilia
Helen
Leonore
Adriana
Eleanor
Juliana
Wilhelmina
Philippa
Louise
Alexandra
Christine

My favorite, I think, would be Leonore, or Alexandra if you don’t mind the -a ending.

I think [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] & [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] from above fit your criteria perfectly. However, if you really love [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] I would keep it. If you are close with your sister it would be lovely for your daughter to share her nickname.

I completely understand about the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] thing - I am an [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] and I would love to call my daughter [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] but would want her to have her own name! ”

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]? I think they work just as well as fit with your other criteria.

Some other possibilities:

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anne[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Frederica[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]

If you really love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] i’d say use it. Many sons have their father’s first name so why not mothers and daughters? I think [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is also fine to use. You could use [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] if you don’t want to share [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] with your sister but honestly it’s no big deal sharing the same nickname with your aunt.

Also, [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] gives me the same feel as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].

I think it would be ok for them to share a nickname. We have this in my family, many [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]'s as it is a family name, but they all use a different nickname. There are so many possibilities with [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_u]Kay[/name_u], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_f]Cathy[/name_f], [name_u]Cato[/name_u], etc. I think the best option if you want to use [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f] is to use a middle name nickname in the family, this is what my cousin does. Then she can choose if she wants to be just [name_f]Katie[/name_f] with friends or use her middle name nickname. Example, [name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_f]Liz[/name_f], etc. We tend to call my aunt, Aunt [name_f]Katie[/name_f] to help clarify. But its never really been confusing in the family. Plus it is honoring your sister then!

some other names I think fit your criteria (in addition to some of those already suggested):
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Maria[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f]
