I am tire kicking the name [name]Leo[/name]. I would happily use [name]Leo[/name] as a FN, DH agrees.
My other kids think a [name]Leo[/name] should have a longer name and have [name]Leo[/name] as a nn.
[name]Leonard[/name] is a family name- so it makes sense to use that if I were to use a longer name.
But is it too Big Bang [name]Theory[/name] (BBT)? My DD says it would be ‘cool’ to be named [name]Leonard[/name] like the BBT. I said to her “yeah, but he is a NERD. Not like calling a kid a name of some hot cool guy from some show”. [name]Do[/name] you think that BBT makes [name]Leonard[/name] a nerd name? He would pretty well be called [name]Leo[/name] most of the time anyway. Or just go [name]Leo[/name]? WDYT?
emiliaj
BTW just thought of the episode where they are out camping and are given the ‘cookies’ and get high not realising they are hash cookies. [name]Leonard[/name] complains to the others “even my name has NERD in it!”. LOL
[name]Leonard[/name] is my second fave character on that show ([name]Sheldon[/name] is my favorite ^_^)
That being said, I don’t think it makes [name]Leonard[/name] a nerd name. Besides, what’s wrong with being intelligent?
I love [name]Leonard[/name], and not just because of the character. I think it’s a strong, masculine name and [name]Leo[/name] is very cool (as a full first name, or a nickname).
I like having a more fuller name as a base. I don’t watch big bang theory, but I know of the show. I love the office and think more of “the nard dog” but thats a really big stretch. I would think leonard is a more formal name either way. Its kinda smart guy sounding, but I don’t think in a bad way. I think the ooober cool [name]Leo[/name] sets it off with ease.
I love the character [name]Leonard[/name] too. OK, maybe I need to practice saying it and see if it grows on me to have a ‘long’ name for a little [name]Leo[/name]. Nothing wrong with brains, wish more people had them! LOL My greatgrandpa was a [name]Leonard[/name]- and he was a strong honest gentle man. Looking through DH family tree it also appears in his ancestory. Maybe that is a ‘sign’.
Smart but not nerdy? [name]Glad[/name] to hear it. [name]Leo[/name] is really my major crush name atm. I like it’s simplicity, strength yet quirk.
Nerd is in! While [name]Leonard[/name] is a bit too nerdy for me, I definitely think it’s usable, and I love the whole good-hearted lion impression I get every time I hear a [name]Leo[/name] name. [name]How[/name] often would he go by [name]Leonard[/name]? I don’t think it’d be too bad.
I love [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Leander[/name], and [name]Leopold[/name], all nn’d [name]Leo[/name], too, if you’re looking for more options.
[name]Elliott[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name]… maybe to far a stretch for me
[name]Leander[/name] makes me think of [name]Leanne[/name]. I did look up and consider [name]Lysander[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name] but felt it was a stretch too far.
[name]Leopold[/name] sounds nerdier than [name]Leonard[/name] to me. LOL
I saw some people suggest [name]Leonidas[/name]. DH looked at me like I was crazy when I said that name.
Maybe I am just a [name]Leo[/name] person?
WHAT… it’s on [name]Star[/name] Trek too? Wow, maybe it is a nerd name?
I noticed [name]Lennon[/name] on your signature… hmmm [name]Lennon[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name]? Or a stretch way too far?
lol, [name]Leonard[/name] Nimoy is an actor that played someone on [name]Star[/name] Trek. He played [name]William[/name] [name]Bell[/name] on the [name]FOX[/name] show, Fringe, too.
[name]Lennon[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name] could work! I also like [name]Lennox[/name]. Maybe [name]Leo[/name] for that?
My son is [name]Leo[/name], and I get asked ALL THE TIME, " is it short for something?" It used to really bug me, but now I’m ok with just saying, “nope, he’s a [name]Gemini[/name] named [name]Leo[/name],” which also answers the other question I’m frequently asked! I’m perfectly happy with his name, but if such questions would bother you, that might be another reason to go with something longer.
I don’t watch BBT, so [name]Leonard[/name] makes me think of the singer/songwriter [name]Leonard[/name] [name]Cohen[/name],which is a good thing, [name]IMO[/name]. I also like the suggestion of [name]Lennon[/name]- that could work! Have you thought of [name]Leon[/name]?
Ha ha ha! We are not a great ‘sporting’ family and tend to academics so a [name]Leo[/name] would probably be a nerd anyway.
My DD likes [name]Leonardo[/name] after the actor naturally. Prob a bit ethnic as our LN is also somewhat ethnic but not that ethnic. If that makes sense?
[name]How[/name] have you liked your choice of the name [name]Leo[/name]? I am happy with just [name]Leo[/name] as a stand alone, don’t think it would bother me. Maybe I could tease people and tell them it is short for [name]Leonidas[/name]?
My [name]Leo[/name] is eleven months old, and I love his name. I do wish I didn’t get the “what’s it short for?” question all the time, but I don’t let it bother me. We can’t all be name nerds and know that [name]Leo[/name] is a perfectly legit first name! It met our long list of criteria: family, nature, literary, historical…and it totally fits my little dude. He’s goofy, sweet, brave, loves being outside, and laughs all.the.time! If I had one regret, it would be that [name]Leo[/name] doesn’t lend itself to nicknames. While its short enough to not NEED one, I definitely find myself calling [name]Leo[/name] by a number of unrelated pet names, and I think it would be nice if they were more, well, related!
I think [name]Leo[/name] is fine on it’s own. My fiance’ sister’s first child was going to be named [name]Leo[/name], but he was still born.
I think [name]Leonard[/name] is fine. The Big Bang [name]Theory[/name] is geared towards late teens/adults, so kids won’t know that [name]Leonard[/name] is a geeky name. Plus if you plan to call him [name]Leo[/name], none of them will know that his full name is [name]Leonard[/name] unless he tells them.
[name]Leonard[/name] is cool, plus he would have the option to go by [name]Leo[/name] if he wanted to. I highly doubt that anyone will give a second thought to BBT in a few years anyway.
Thanks for sharing. I ask DH about the name [name]Leo[/name] and he said he would call the kid the nn [name]Simba[/name]. LOL I suspect I would use the nn [name]Le[/name].
The personality sounds like the sort of personality I link with the name!!
I think it is strong enough to be a name alone too. Great point- BBT is geared more to teens/adults. It’s not like I am calling him “[name]Ben[/name]” ie Ben10. Thanks for that insightful comment!
