Oh, btw none of your choices are popular here in Germany, not even [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] ([name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is a different story). I don’t think popularity should matter but rather if she can identify with the culture the names (clearly) link to. [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] links my thinking to a different, older time period than [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], the latter is more modern and thus more identifiable with for me.
(just wanted to explain the thoughts behind my earlier post a bit more)
I love [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] (pronounced the [name_m]German[/name_m] way, but two years of [name_m]German[/name_m] class leaves you pronouncing any name the [name_m]German[/name_m] way) while [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] seems very short and incomplete. I’d suggested it as a nn for [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] as well.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!
I can sympathize with your struggle - I’m half german and wanted to give at least one of my kids a german-sounding name but traditional german names are not used by modern Germans who seem to prefer very similar names to [name_u]North[/name_u] Americans except they are spelled or pronounced differently. ([name_m]Sebastien[/name_m], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_m]Kristoff[/name_m], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Char[/name_f]-lo-tta)). Having said that, if you don’t live in Germany and don’t expect to live there or visit frequently, I wouldn’t worry too much about what the average [name_m]German[/name_m] thinks about your daughter named [name_f]Liesl[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] or [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f].
I like all these names but I personally would be a little bit afraid that [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] would get [name_f]Lorie[/name_f] as a nickname and [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] would just get [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] as a nickname. Food for thought!
[name_m]Viel[/name_m] Gluck!
Beco, ming more familiar because of The Book Thief.
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] are lovely! I have a hard time finding [name_m]German[/name_m] names, too, although I wish I could add more to my list that I really love (especially since I have a lot of [name_m]German[/name_m] ancestry, but also from the [name_m]German[/name_m] area of Switzerland!). I’m not sure if Germans would consider them truly [name_m]German[/name_m] names, but I found these on the [name_m]German[/name_m] girls’ name list on BtN and I really loved them:
[name_f]Odilia[/name_f] (omgoodness, my favorite from the whole list! The story of St. [name_f]Odilia[/name_f] I found very beautiful, and I just love the name. It reminds me of blooming lilies and blossoming springtime)
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] (I love it just for the nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelina[/name_f]
Hannelotte/[name_f]Hannelore[/name_f]
[name_f]Lieselotte[/name_f]
Annevieve
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
Annegret
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
I think [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] is nice–I like [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] as a spelling more (even though it sort of looks like weasel!)–it’s not something I’d use, I think, but I did [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] growing up, and I feel like it is really wearable.
I really love all of these
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] - I really love this name. I know a few girls named [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] and each is ridiculously sweet
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] - will always be associated with [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls for me, but it’s a great name!
[name_f]Liesel[/name_f] - I like it. It definitely feels more [name_m]German[/name_m] than the others–like [name_f]Brigita[/name_f] but I think it could work. I love the idea of using [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f].
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f] - I know a 9 year old named [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and it’s a beautiful fit for her.
[name_f]My[/name_f] best friend in elementary school was named [name_f]Liesel[/name_f]. I think it is a beautiful name. I prefer the [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] spelling simply because it is what is familiar to me, but [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] is pretty too.
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
I always seem to be alone when I argue against this name, so I doubt this will matter but when I hear [name_f]Liesl[/name_f], I think diesel gasoline and weasel. I don’t see the appeal, honestly. [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] and [name_f]Annaliese[/name_f] and much, much, much, much, much, MUCH prettier.
